LOCK-Morvrrsnn.
Application led February 14, 1907. Serial No. 357,350.
To all 'whom tt may concern: i
Be it known that we, JOHN E. DoLnT and HENRY L. CHENERY, citizens of theUnited States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland 'and State of Maine, have invented an Improvement -in VLock-Mortisers and we hereby declare that the following is a ul nclear, and exact description of the inventlon7 which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and Our invention relates to a device designed for maklng mortises -1n doors and misnmlar articles.
It consists of a frame with plates whereby 1t maybe adjusted laterally upon the door, a cross-head with suitable means whereby it may be raised or depressed,` a tool holder attached to4 the cross-head, means which may be employed for depressing or lowering the cross-head and means which may be ernployed when it is desired to bore or mortise at an angle, other than a right angle, with the edge of the door or other artic e.'1
In the drawing: Figure l is a lperspective v1ew of our device; Fig. 2 is a top plan showing means for de ressing or lowering the cross-head; Fig. 3 1s a detail in side elevation of means whereby the tool holder u on the'l cross-head may be placed and fixe at an angle other than a right angle, the crolss bar being `shown `insection on line 3 3 ofI 'g 4;
Fig. 4 is a detail in top plan of the means A shown in 'Fig' 3; FiO. 5 1s a vertical-transverse section ofthe s of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is/acvertical transverse section on the line 6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a detail showing the rack upon the-rod a. e
The frameconsists of the rods a a which are provided at thel top and bottom with cross bars b rovided with wings'or ears .c c and also at t e point of the attachment of the ears to the cross bars with circular opendngsforlthe reception of the rods a a. The rods a a. are lsecured in the openings d d by means ofthe set screws-'e e, see Fig. l., Each ear c is provided with a threaded aperture f similarly located and adapted to receive the threaded screw g which 1s provided with a thumb piece h. The screw g is made hollow for the reception ofthe pin "Il, the outer end of which is headed as seen at y, see Fig. 6. The
other, or inner, end of the in i `in each instance is 'fixed to the plates c respectlvely.` These two plates are located upon either side l Specification ofi'Letters Patent.

planes normally parallel with each other and at right angles with the comu mon plane of the rods a., a. -The lates are l preferably somewhat longer than t e length of said rods and may beof rectan ular shape as shown in Fig. l. The crossead Z, see Figs. 1 and 2, is adapted to slide u on the rods a ct. At one side, it is provide with a set screw m, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The
,front face of the cross-head is provided with a tool holder n which is-shown 1n Figs. l and 2, as fixed to the face of the cross-head at a right angle to the plane ofthe rods a a.' The interior diameter of the tool holder n should be that ofthe bit or tool which is intended to 7o be used. Bushing, however, may be provided for use within the tool holder whereby Ibits or tools of varying shapes and sizes may be usedl The bit p or tool used may be rovided with a collar g near its outer end w ich may be set by means of the set screw r in varying positions to operate as a'guide in determiningthe depth of the cut made by the tool. A scale may be placed upon the side of one of the plates whereby the position of the succes'sive operations may be regulated or determined.
Means whereby the cross-head Z may be raised or de ressed are shown in Fig. 2 which consist of t 1e ears s s which are fixed u on 85 one end of the cross-head, preferably' t at o posite that which carries the set screw m. Tlhese ears are provided with suitable aper\ tures for the reception of a small shaft t which carries between the ears a gear u, a
portion of the side of the cross head being removed for its reception. This gear lntermatches with a rack upon the rod a.. The
outer'end of the shaft t is provided with the l thumb piece v (see Fig. 2). In Figs. 3 and 4 95 are shown means whereby the tool holder nA may be placed'in and set at an angle other than a right angle with the plane of the rods `a a.. The ends of the cross head Z are provided on the inside with gudgeons or circular 10o studs w, the plane of which is at right angles with the plane of the rods a. The central portion of the cross head is provided with sockets x for the reception of the gudgeons w as shown in Figs: 3 and 4. alpertures throughthe sockets x are placed t e set screws y y.
The operation of the device is as follows: The central vertical line of the edge of the door to be operated on' having been located, 110
In suitable the plates k lc are laced on either' side ofmthe door at the proper eight and by means of the set screws gage z z shall be directly in line with the center of the door when the frame is securely clamped by means of the thumbvscrews 7L upon the door. The tool to`be used is placed in the tool holder n, the requisite number. of bushings being used to make an aperture of the required size.' The gage or collar q is now fixed upon the tool at such oint as to prevent the penetration ofthe too to greater depth than desired. The cross head Z,'the
set screw m being retracted,is raised to such. point as lsneeded in order to make a mortise of the proper height. As generally operated, an ordlnary bit stock isnow used and a bore made. The tool'is then withdrawn from the Y head is simultaneous y de rssed by means fio of the thumb piece v untithe lower end of lthe mortise has been reached, the result of the operation bein' that all the irregularities of either side of t e mortise will have been \re moved by the tool. In addition to the accuracy and speed'with which the work of mortising -is accomplishedftlre plates 7c 7c serve a further ofi-ice of preventing the'splitting of the door which sometimes occurs in the ordinary method now employed.
' Z, we do not depend u on the use of the rackv In depressing and lowering the cross head and pinion o erated y the thumb screw c,
but ordinari y prefer touse the device as shown in Fig'. 1 as a slight downward Dres-v L are so placed thatl the center of the front of the frame as indicated by the sure of the hand on the' tool, holder willy accomplish the desired resulty especially when'l the softerwoodsI are being operated upon. r
What we claim is: J1.V The Lcombination'" of whereby it may be clamped to the object to be operated on, a cross-head adapted to slide u on said frame, a tool holder having a fixed ocation upon said cross-head and. means whereby said 'cross-head may be moved upon said frame,l substantially y as described.
42. The combination of a frame,` means whereby it may be clamped to the object to' be operated on, a cross-head adapted'to slide upon said frame, a' tool holderhaving aiiXed location; upon said cross-head, means whereby said cross-head ma bre raised .or depressed and means for hol gsaid cross-v head in a desired described. f
3. The combination of a frame having a movable cross-head carrying. a tool holder having a Xed locationuthereon, movable plates on either side of, said i"rame,"means whereby" said plates may be clamped to the object yto be operated on and the relative position of the tool Vholder to said" plates varied as desired, substantiallyas described.
4. The combination of a frame provided with plates upon either side, means whereby each of said plates may-be adjustably clamped toy the object to be operated on, a cross-head ada ted .to slide u on'said frame anda tool hol er havin a ed jlocation upon said cross-head, su stantially as described.
a `frame, means position, subsgtantially asK In testimony, that We claim theforegoing "as our inventlon we' have hereunto set our hands this thirteenth day of February, A.
