Be it known that I, CHARLES WUEsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at J amaica, Queens county, State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful Im` provements in Medicine-Injectors for Veterinary Purposes, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
This invention relates to a medicine injector for veterinary purposes, in other words my improved device resembles a halter having a partially hollow bit and is adapted to facilitate the administering of medicine' to cattle, particularly horses, of a yfractions/or spirited' nature. Y
With the aid of my improved injector, medicine can be administered to horses and cattle without having to use force, thereby causing pain.
To these and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention comprises the novel features of improvement and combination and arrangement of parts which I will now proceed to describe and finally claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein:-
Figure 1illustrates the manner of using my improved device; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical central sectional detail view of the medicine injecting device, the loop attached thereto for the purpose of aiding in raising the animals head being shown in elevation and partly in section; Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-sectional detail view, taken on a line a-a in Fig. 2 of the bit-portion of the device; Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary detail view of the loop, looking from the right in Fig. 2, and shows the manner of attaching one of the halter straps thereto; and Fig. 5 is a similar view looking from the left in Fig. 2, the valve being omitted.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 illustrates the manner of using the device, which is as follows: To administer medicine to' an animal, I place the bit 1 (Fig. 2) in the animals mouth, in the usual manner, and pass the halter 2 (Fig. 1) over the animals head and allow it to rest on the neck as shown. By means of the buckle 3, I tighten the halter 2 to bring the bit 1 to the back of the animals mouth. I then attach one end of a cable 4, which passes over sheaves 5, which in turn are secured to the ceiling of. a stable, for in,- stance, to the loop 6 of t e injector. I then pull the ring 7, for instance, downwardly and draw the animals head up, as shown in Fig. 1. As can be seen in Fig. 2, the bit 1 has attached thereto the loop 6, which in turn has attached thereto an eye 8 adapted to receive one end of the cable 4. One side 9 of the loop 6, is in this instance, riveted to the bit 1, as at 10, the other side 11 being adapted to fit over the threaded lug l2 on the bit 1 and held in position by a fitting 13 which is adapted to engage the threads of the said lug 12. The side 9 of the loop 6 and the iitting 13 larefeach provided with eyes 14 which are adapted to receive one end of each strap which comprises the halter 2 (see Figs. 4 and 5), the ends of said straps being secured in the eyes 14 in any suitable manner.
The bit 1 is provided with a bore 15 having an outlet 16. The fitting 13 has a bore v17 adapted to communicate with the bore 15 in the bit 1. The bore 17, in the fitting 13, has in communication therewith an opening 18, which in turn communicates with a raduated medicine receptacle 19, preferabgly of glass, the said receptacle being secured in said fitting in any desirable manner. clude dirt, also to prevent the medicine from spilling, I preferably provide the receptacle 19, at the top thereof, with a hinged cover 2O having a latching device 21 (see Fig. 1). The iow of medicine from the receptacle 19 is controlled by a stop-cock valve 22 having a lug 23 adapted to close the opening 18.
After the animals head has been raised, in a manner hereinbefore described, the recep tacle 19 having first been charged With the proper amount of medicine, the stop-cock valve 22 is manipulated to allow the medicine to flow from the receptacle 19 into the bores 15 and 17, thence through the outlet 16 into the animals throat. The graduations 24 on the receptacle 19 represent ounces or any other form of measurement. By graduating the receptacle 19, I am able to dispense the medicine in the receptacle in proper proportions.
By raising the animals head the medicine will flow down its throat by gravity. In most cases the animal can be led to the cable 4, which is preferably hung near the'stall, and the injector placed in its mouth, after which the head can be raised. In the event of the animal being spirited, I back it into the stall .and then adjust the injector. If the To eX-h animal rebels it naturally backs, but cannot get away owing to the presence of the manger. The halter 2 keeps the bit of the injector in place; consequently after having once placed the injector in place there is nothing that the animal can do to prevent the administering of the medicine.
l do not limit myself to the precise construction herein illustrated, as my improved device can be embodied in various forms.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A medicine injecting device, adapted for veterinary purposes, comprising a bit having a bore and an outlet therefrom, said bit being rovided on one end thereof with a threaded ing, a loop having one of its sides, or members riveted to one end of said bit, the other side, or member, having an opening adapted to pass over said lug, a fitting adapted to engage the threads of said lug and hold the last named side of the loop in position, a medicine receptacle carried by said fitting,
said receptacle being in communication with the bore of said bit.
2. A medicine injecting device, adapted for veterinary purposes, comprising a bit having a bore and an outlet therefrom, said bit being rovided onone end thereof with a threaded ug, a loop having one of its sides, or members riveted to one end of said bit, the other side, or member, having an opening adapted to pass over said lug, a iitting adapted to engage the threads of said lug and hold the last named side of the loop in position, said fitting being provided with a bore ada ted to aline with the bore of said bit, a va ve in said bore, and a medicine rece tacle carried by said fitting, said receptac e being in communication with the bore of said fitting.
