The invention relates to a bit and more especially to a bridle bit.

The primary object of the invention is the pro- Vision of a bit of this character wherein the mouth bar or bit proper has therein a cavity so that medicament can be stored therein for the administering thereof to the animal when drinking or eating the medicament, which is for the treatment of throat disorders, colds, coughs or the like.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a bit of this character wherein through the use of weights the mouth bar or bit proper with the cavity therein will be balanced or held in a position to have the cavity uppermost within the mouth of the animal when wearing the bit to avoid injury to the tongue of such animal during the wearing period of such bit and also to assure the administering of medicament to the said animal.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a bit of this character, which is simple in its construction, unique in the makeup of the same, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred and modified forms of embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.

Referring to the drawing in detail, particularly Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, A designates generally the bit constructed in accordance with the invention and comprises a mouth bar or bit proper ll] of the required shape in cross section and in this instance has formed at opposite ends thereof ball-like terminals ll. Provided medially in the bar or bit proper III is an elongated pocket or cavity l2 which is adapted to accommodate medicaments to be administered to an animal wear ing the bit for the treatment of certain ailments or throat disorders, as, for example, colds, coughs, etc. The wall [3 of this pocket or cavity I2 is outstruck so that the entrance opening to said pocket or cavity, that is to say, the edge thereof will overhang the said wall and in this way effective for retaining the medicaments as may be packed within the pocket or cavity.

Fitted to the ball terminals II are ring-like members I4 having extending outwardly medially thereof pivot ears l5 in which are detachably engaged pivot pins I 6 which are also loosely fitted in the terminals ll so that the ring-like members M are free for swinging movement on the axes constituted by the said pivot pins 16.

Each ring-like member I4 has provided therein the slots ll, l8 and 19, respectively. The slot I1 is for the attachment of the cheek strap (not shown) for a bridle While the slot I8 is for the attachment of a nose strap (not shown) of the said bridle and the slot I9 is for the attachment of driving reins to each ring member l4.

Formed with each ring member 14 for vertical alignment with the cavity or pocket I2 is a balancing weight 20 designed for the purpose of holding the bit when within the mouth of an animal whereby the cavity or pocket I2 will be uppermost of the said bit for the proper administering to the mouth of the animal wearing the bit of medicaments placed within said pocket or cavity and for the consumption by the animal of the medicaments during the wearing of the bit.

In Figures 5 and 6 of the drawing there is shown a slight modification wherein each ring member 2|, being identical to the ring member I4, has joined therewith an extension or arm 22 carrying an elongated eye 23 for the fastening of a strap therewith, the strap being not shown and is a part of a bridle.

What is claimed is:

A bit of the kind described, comprising a mouth bar having a cavity uppermost therein, bridle strap rings carried by the ends of the mouth bar and having slots in their upper ends on the same side with the cavity in the mouth bar adapted to receive the cheek straps of a bridle, and balancing weights carried by said rings on the opposite sides from the cheek strap slots, whereby the mouth bar is normally held with the cavity in an uppermost position.
