BREEGHING SNAP-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 6, 1907.

Serial No. 400,934.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED W. COVERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Watervliet, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breeching Snap- I-Iooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an improvement in breeching snap hooks and it is embodied in the construction and arrangement of parts presently to be described and defined in the claims.
Heretofore in constructing devices of this type, it has been customary to form on the side of the clip part, at the end of the hook,
a frame or loop to which the supporting strap is connected. This frame or loop has been placed centrally between the side edges of one of the arms of the clip part, in which it has been usual to form the opening for the reception ofone end of the screw bolt or pintle, to which the draw strap is applied. The construction resulted in the application of the pintle or screw bolt first through the opening in the lower arm of the clip or from the side opposite the said frame and, inasmuch as said pintles were usually screw threaded on one end, it is found necessary to insert the screw upward through a tapped hole formed in the upper arm of the clip immediately below the cross-bar of the frame. The result of such a construction was that the screw being head down frequently became loose and would fall out, and further it was found difficult to roperly tap the hole in the upper arm of the c ip masmuch as the tap was required to be passed through a pre viously formed opening in the opposite arm of the clip and then carried upward and forced through the alined opening below the said frame. This often resulted in the prevention of the complete tapping of the opening by the end of the tap coming in contact with the frame, it also required the removal of a hook upon each tap being completed. It was also found, in the prior constructions, that the side of the hook or frame was held in a position to engage either 'the adjacent part of the harness, vehicle or the animal.
My present invention relates to an improvement on the above designed type of hook and it consists conveniently and primarily in offsetting the said frame that is to say locating the frame or loop at one side as distinguished from centrally so that the screw or pintle for supporting the draw strap connection with the hook, can be placed with the head up and the tapping of the thread being effected without interference on the part of the frame or loop and also enables the manufacturers to place the screw or pintle through branches of the clip and to head or rivet over the ends thereof; which was prac tically impossible heretofore on account of the frame or loop being in the way. The offsetting of the frame also enables me to form the opening or hole in the frame carrying arm by a punch and thereby avoid the the use of mold cores to form the opening in casting the frame, as has been necessary heretofore.
Afurther object is to provide a hook with the frame offset so that the strap will, in efiect, form a wearing surface or guide.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown a form of snap hook embodying the invention, but it is to be understood that various changes can be made without departing from the principle and nature thereof.
Figure 1 is an elevation showing parts in section, Fig. 2 is an edge view, Fig. 3 is an elevation of a D, and Fig. 4 is a top plan of the same.
A designates the frame of the clip or shackle which is of D-shape having formed in the lower arm or branch thereof a screw threaded o ening, and in its upper branch an alining cy indrical opening, these openings being conveniently adjacent the outer ends of the branches. Through the openings is passed a screw threaded pintle B having an anti-friction sleeve C thereon. On the u per branch of the clip is formed a frame or oop E, the same being cast as a part of the clip and extends from the outer end of the upper branch to a oint near the inner end thereof. This frame is offset, the outer end being secured to an extension (I of the up er arm of the part A, While the inner en of the frame is connected with the base of the u per branch of the part A but'to one side 0 the center thereof, as shown in Fig. 2. By offsetting this frame art E, that is by locating the same at one si e, the screw B can be inserted and removed from above and in tapping or forming the screw thread it can be done without the tool engaging or being interfered with by the frame. offsetting the frame also permits the formation of the opening or hole in the frame carrying arm with a punch, obviating the necessity of the use of cores in casting, which has heretofore been thought indispensable, it also permits heading up or riveting one or both ends of the pintle or screw after the sleeve has been placed thereon. It will also be noted that, when the strap is to pass through ,the frame, it will, in effect, form a cushion for adjacent parts as it will project beyond the side of the frame.
In the first two figures, I have shown a snap hook of well known form attached to the clip part, while in Figs. 3 and 4 it is shown omitted, the essential feature of the invention being the offsetting of the loop or frame.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a clip member comprising two connected oppositely arranged arms having alined openings therein, of a loop on one of the arms positioned at the side of the longitudinal center thereof and beyond the plane of the opening in the arm, and a pintle secured in the opening in the arms and extending across the clip.
2. The combination with a snap hook, of a D-shaped clip attached to the end thereof, a removable plntle secured in the outer ends of the branches of the clip, and a loop or frame formed on one of the branches of the clip and offset laterally beyond the plane of the pintle, said pintle being positioned intermediate the ends of said loop frame.
3. The combination with a branched clip having alined openings in the branches adjacent the ends thereof, and rovided with a lateral offset portion extending from the end of the upper branch, of a loop frame on the upper branch, said loop frame having its ends connected respectively to the body-of the branch and to the offset portion extending laterally from the end thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED W. COVERT.
