DILPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF CORDED-EDGE PAPER. GOODS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sanc- To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADNA T. DENISON, of Poland, in the county of Androscoggin, and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Corded-Edge Paper Goods; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use my invention.
.An application for Letters Patent is now pending in the Patent Office of ihe United States for an article of manufacture called corded-edged paper goods, and there is also pending an appiicatiou for patent upon a machine for the manufacture of said corded-edged paper goods.
My application has in view the production of an improvement in the process of manufacture of said goods in said machine.
During the process of passing the paper through the said machine, for the purpose of inserting the cord at a certain stage in the process, the paper is touched with mucilage or paste, and the edge thereof then folded down over the cord, as shown in said application.
Experiment has shown that when the fold of the paper is held by mucilage, or other adhesive substance, and after the article is manufactured, the edges thereof are somewhat rough and rigid, in consequence of the adhesive substance hardening when dry.
Before the paper enters the said corded-edge machine, I contemplate passing it through a steam-box, in which, becoming saturated and softened by the moisture of the steam, the process of folding the edge is more easily and perfectly effected, and this process secures a more nearly perfect contact with the face of the paper.
I do not claim the steam-box, and the same can be used in conjunction with the machine, as convenience, or other circumstances require; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As an improvement upon the said corded-edge paper machine, before alluded to, the process of passing the strips of paper to be corded and folded, through a steambox, previous to the process of cording and folding, as therein described, substantially as and for the purpose described.
