JONATHAN CARL, OF GRENADA-MISSISSIPP I, AssiGNoR To I SELF AND J. A. CARLQOF SAME PLACEQ Leem ramt No.. 89,125, dated .1pm '20, 1869.
To all' whom fit may concern.-
B'e it known that I, vJONA'IHAN CARL, of Grenada, in the county of Yala'busha, and Stateof Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ohurns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and `correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, and in which- .Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section Figure 2, a plan View, partly in horizontal section on the plane line x cv, g.- 1; and A Y Figure 3, a detached view of mode of connecting the stationary dashers.
In order that those skilled in the art may be enabled to use my invention, I subjoiu the following explanation of its manner of construction and workings.
In iig. 1, A A A represent the side and bottom of the churn-box, or tub, which is constructed inthe form of a parallelopipedon of .boards arranged with the grain of the wood running horizontally, instead of perpendicularly, as is usually the case, with the corners mitred, and the whole firmly bound together by hoops N, of suitable material, at proper distances apart. The bottom of the chum is inserted before the sides are finally fastened, by being set in grooves preparedin the sides for that purpose.
C represents the dasher-shaft, inthe lower end of Y which is an iron pivot, or shaft c, which -goesthrough the bottom of the churn, and rests upon the bed-piece K, as represented in the drawings, fig.- 1.
D D represent the dashers` of the churn, having ahole the size of the shaft O at their centres made to receive the same, and when in use, are kept in their proper place upon the shaft by means of the pins d d. Holes may be made in the shaft, to keep the dashers at any desired elevation, in this manner.
E representsthebreakers, fastened in each one of the fourfangles of the churn, theirl edges converging tOWardsthe centre.
These have portions of their width e e out out, in order to permit the dashers D D to play freely.
The breakers E are secured in position by horizontal bars a a, as shown thereby in fig. 3..
The machinery is propelled by a belt, F, running from the driving-wheel, or drum H, supported in the frameI I, to the head O of the shaft O.
`The drum, or driving-wheel'is propelled by-one,v or
two cranks upon the shaft that supports the wheel in the frame, as seen at M,- fig. 2. f G is a pulleyfvr which the belt runs, and which is arranged to move up or down, as may be desired, to tighten er loosen the belt, being kept in position by'means of -one or more pieces passing through it,-
into the body of the churn.
Having thus described 'my invention,
What I claim as nem-and for which I desire to secure Letters Patent, is-
1. 'lhe combination of the breakersE and movable dashers D, constructed and, arranged as described.
2. The movable dashers D and breakers E, operating within the churn-box A, as set forth, in` combination' with the driving-apparatus H, F, andM, and the pnl# ley G- 3. The removable breakers E, in combination with horizontal bars a, for securing them in position, as, represented.
To the above speciiicati'on of `my improvement inf 'churn and dashers, I have signed my hand this 18th day of Augnst, A. D. 1868.
JONATHAN CARL.
