Description

No. 891,257. a v PATENTBD JUNE 23, 1908.
R. W. HOPE & S. F. STAMBAUGH..
WRENCH. Q APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 11, 1907.
W/T/VESSES I IN VENTOH'S:
w m B N P m mm A w mm mm m H5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT W. HOPE AND SAMUEL F. STAMBAUGH, OF SHELBY, OHIO.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 11, 1907.1 Serial No. 392,294.
Patented June 23, 1908.
'structions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side view of a wrench embodying the invention. Fig. 2
is anedge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the side plates showing the jaw block carried thereby and having what for convenience of reference we term the fixed jaw. Fig. 4 is a detail view showin the sliding jaw including the jaw block and t e sliding plates carrying the said block, and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view drawn alongsidethe handle and showing the rollers and the cam slot receiving the r'olleron the sliding jaw.
As shown, the'fixed jaw comprises the side plates A which are alike, except that they are rights, and it its and are provided with a main plate A having an opening A for the pivot B, which connects them with the handle O, and the mainplate A is also provided with slots A extending laterally and arranged to receive the projecting ends of a bearing pin D for the roller D operating in the cam slot C. of the handle O.
The side 'plates A are provided at their upper edges at one end with projecting lugs A between which is held the jaw block E of thefixed jaw. The upper ed es of the main plate A are rovided withaterally. offset portions A w 'ch provide flanges operating a as tracksu on which the sliding plates carry,- ing the sli ing jaw block move'in the operation of the invention. .These sliding plates- F are-formed with' main plates F which are perforated at F for the passage of the beari pin D, and these main plates F are flange at their u per edges at F to rest and slide upon the anges A of the side plates A, and lugs F, project outwardly from the up er edges-of the'mainlate F and receive etween them the sliding jaw block-E which is secured by suitable fastenings F which ma be in the form of bolts, as shown, I
By preference the handle is pivoted.- at
war
O 'to the side plates A at A 'and an antifriction roller C may surround the pivot pin O to relieve friction as will be understood from the drawing.
It will be noticed that we provide a wrench in which the side plates A and the sliding plates F carry their respective jaw blocks and are flanged to slide one upon the other in the operation of the invention. This fianging of the side and slidingv plates also gives such parts rigidity in a lateral direction and aids in securing the desired strength without unnecessarily increasing the weight of the wrench.
Itwill be noticed that the bearing pin D carrying the roller D operating in they cam slot C projects into the slots A of the side plates so the latter operate as guides in the sliding movement of the sliding jaw as the wrench is operated. j
The construction is simple, easily constructed and'willbe found efficient for the purpose for which it is designed.
' Manifestl the jaw blocks'may be made in any suitab e shape and may be toothed, rou hed or smoothed as desired and the wor ing faces thereof can be shaped to adapt them to any kind of work.
It will beunderstood that in operation the jaw blocks and other movable parts of the wrench may be secured by bolts, screws, pins, rivets or other suitable forms of fastening.
In the operation of the invention centrifulgal action may be utilized in swinging the andle to 0 en the jaws. Manifestly, jaw blocks of d erent shapes maybe made for various sizes of wrenches.
We claim:'
1. The improvement in wrenches herein described, comprising the handle having the pivot opening and the slotted opening beyond the same, a fixed jaw having side plates provided with a main plate having a pivot openingand provided above "the same with transversely extending slots and having its side pates, 'lateralfiangesat the upper ed es of the main plate forming ways or tracks or the sliding jaw, the sliding jaw having slidin plates comprising the main plates flange outwardly at their upgpr edges and-havmg I said flanges sliding on t e edge flanges of the side lates and providedat' one end with out- I igojectmg lugs andwith the sliding oc jaw b held; between the same, the main plates of the sliding jaw being provided with openings for the passage of a ivot pin, apivot in assing through sai openings and through the slotted opening in thehandle and projecting at its ends-into the lateral slots of the side plates of the fixed jaw, and a roller on the said pin and operating in the slotted opening of the handle, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination in a wrench, of a fixed jaw block, a sliding jaw block, side plates having lugs carrying the fixed jaw lock and also having main plates and outwardly turned flanges at the upper edges of said main plates, a sliding jaw having a jaw block and sliding plates provided with lugs carrying thejaw block, the said sliding plates also having main plates whose upper edges are turned outward forming flanges and the sliding jaw whereby to operate the latter, substantially as set forth.
3. A wrench comprising a fixed jaw having side plates and lugs rojecting therefrom, and a jaw block held getween the said proj ecting lugs, and a sliding jaw having a main plate sliding between the main plates of the fixed jaw and provided with spaced apart lugs and with a jaw block held between the same, and intermediate devices between the fixed and sliding jaw for operating the latter, substantially as set forth.
