Description
No. 891,250. f PATENTED JUNE 23; '-s. w. s. HAMM. LAMP AND LANTBRN.
`API-"ILJATION FILED FEB. 1R. 190'?.
K I amps and Lanterns, of
"g is a speciiication, and ed inthe accompanying a part thereof. llates to lamps, and is also s lused in railway service,
inner surface' of the lamp or lantern; and it.
consists of the structure'hereinafter described l and which is 4illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which-- Fivurel isa detail, partly in section, of aY` switc 1 or signal lamp embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the lamp on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail, Vpartly in section, of one of the parts of the lamp; and Fig. 4 is a detail of a modified form of the samepart.
The lantern body 10 vmay be of any desired form. As shown, it is one or more lateral openin s, each being provided with a llens 11. T e dome 12 is open at the top-to'permit the escape of the vapors resulting from combustion; as shown,
t is opening iscovered by an elevated cap 13.
The dome 1s Iprovided adjacent its base with air induction ports 14, arranged, as shown, as an annular series. Above and below these air ports there are placed annular diaphragms 15, 16, the-upper one of which is imperforate, the lower one 16 being apertured, as shown at 17.
fits within the central phragms and constitutes a smoke flue. Prefer- A tubular member 18 apertures of the diaably,- and as shown, this vtubular member takes the shape of a truncatedcone, and itswalls are imperforate, and incloses, with the two diaphragms v andv the sidewall of the dome, an annular air chamber yor wind chest having the ports 14 infits outer wall and the ports 17 in its lower wall.`
Depending from the diaphragm 16- and in register one with eachy of its ports 17, are hol- A low lobes 19, the upper ends, of which are open, their lower ends 20 being closed.
These lobes have lateral perforations; as i shown yin Fig.
3, such perforations being restricted to the'outeriwalls rovide improved means provided. with the vapors arising v may be foun inner walls being imp y preferred form, but as shown in Fig. 4'the inner walls also may be perforated. j'lhese formp 'in cross section, as shown, they are segmental.
depending lobes may be of any desired liefl'obesfthe erforate, this being-thef.
For convenience in assembling I preferto.
.attach the lobes 19 tothe .member 18 and tol provide the latter memberwith .a plurality of laterally projecting spring fingers .21,:so `disposed that when the member 18 is' inserted upwardly through the diaphragms 15 and 16, the fingers 21 passing -through the apertures 1 7, and is then turned on its axis, theseiingers will bear upon the upper face ofthe diaphragm 16. i A In order to prevent thek arts from accidental displacement, the iaphragm.16v is preferably provided with .a Vpair of upstand ing bosses .22, 23, for frictional engagement by each of the fingers 21.` a convenient and effective means for securing the partsof the lamp in place, any means for removably holding the member 18 and lobes 19 in position for use-- may be employed.
In service the air for supporting combustion enters the lamp through the parts 14, and, passing downwardly through the lobes 19, sweeps'the inner surface of the lampbody, preventing the accumulation of moisture upon it,and reaches the burner. The member 18 constitutes the smoke flue located on the vertical axis of the lamp, and hence di- ,rectly'- over the burner, not shown, so that l from the combustion iind direct and unim eded egress. When the inner walls of the ibbes 19 are perforated, as 'in Fig. 4, some of the air wil charged therethrough and of the la'fnp useful function but not lmpairmg the action of the lamp, for an ample su ply of air through the orts 14 is provi ed for. It
to be an economy in manufacture, however, to use foraminous material for the lobes, so that they ma be made .of stock materialinstead of special y prepared plates.
I claim as my invention 1. `-In a lantern, in combination, having' a light-emitting side face, having' lateral air ports, .a pair of annular diaphragms in the dome one above and the other 'be'low the air ports, the lower diahragin having tted within the central apertures of the dia- Will'be carried out a body a dome with the vapors, performing no apertures, a tubular member While this forms `l l, of course, be disphragn'is, and .a hollow lobe of forarninous .v ingterial dependingv from the lower dia-'l' phragm and being 1n lregister with an aper- 2; f In a. lantern,
'diaphragrns in the ture thereof.
in 4 combination, 'a body having alight-emitting side face, a dome having lateral ;ai r orts, a pair ofannul'ar ome one above and the other below the airl ports, the lowerdia- .a ghragm having apertures, a tubular member' tted Within the central apertures of the dia.-4 phragms, and .a hollow lo I vchest at the upper art-of the' body hav in' e outwardly-directe induction ports, a
,rho ow lobe 'depending, from the air chest into the body o 4bodyand having eraledu'ction ports.
4. In a lantern, 1n combination, a body, an annular air che st .at the 'up er portion Aof the outwar ports, a hollowtion lobe depending from such'chest into thebody'fof the lantern and havinlgulatei'al eduetionorts. 4
,5., a lantern, a bo.l y having a dome, a
`with the lateral hragm and have lateral air ports, and means lor holdin@` the lantern and having lat? ower one being apertured,' a1r ports in the dome wall intermediate the diaphragms, a lflue member removably fitting Within the air-or annular diaphragms inthe dome, the
central apertures of the diaphra ms and ca rv rying dependinvliollow lobes W ich register apertures in the lower diathe flue member in place. 6. In allantern, in combination,v a body, a
central eduction flue leading therefrom, a' 'plurality of lobes forming air chambers having perforatewalls lbody `from its upper portion, and induction and depending into the ports communicating with the .air chambers.-
- 7. Ina lantern, in combination, `a bodyhavinga dome, a central flue leading from the body to the-dome, a plurality of air cham i bers having perforate .Walls arranged around the flue and depending into the-body, and lateral induction' ports in the Walls of the dome and communicating with the air cham-A -directed ind'ucj bers.-
