Description

PATENTED JUNE 9, 1908.
N. PERRY.
IRONING BOARD.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 3, 1907.
attozhug UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELLIE PERRY, OF SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK.
IRONING-B OARD To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELLIE PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ironing boards and cover fastenings therefor, the object of the invention being to provide a novel construction of board and means for fastening a cover in osition thereon, whereby the cover may e readily, quickly and conveniently attached and detached at will.
The preferred form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a to plan view of the board, showing in full an dotted lines the fastening means in securing and released positions. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the board with the fastening means in the position disclosed in full lines in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section through the board. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the self-locking adjusting lever and associated parts.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates an ironing board which is referably of ovoid form in order to increase its extent of surface in a lateral direction, and-2 designates the cover for the board. The board is provided in its edge with a continuous groove 3, in which the free depending edge or flap of the cover 2 is adapted to enter and be clamped therein to retain said cover securely in position.
Secured at one end to the rear edge of the board, as by a suitable fastenin l, is a bind ing cord or wire 5 designed to 0 amp the flap of the cover within the marginal groove 3 and to have its opposite or free end 6 terminate at the rear of the board at a point on the opposite side of the center of the board from the attaching device 4.
A support 7 having a screw-threaded shank is fastened in the rear end of the board and is provided with a bifurcated head 8, between the arms of which extends a pintle pin 9. Pivotally mounted upon said pin is a selflocking adjusting lever 10 provided with a pair of oppositely extending arms 11 headed at their outer ends and with which are piv- Specification of Letters Patent.

otally engaged the hooked ends of a bailshaped link 12, to the body portion of which the free end 6 of the binding cord or wire is attached. The forward end of the lever projects between the arms of the head 8 and is bent to form a hook 13 engaging the pintle 9, while the rear end of the lever is shaped to form an operating handle 14.
When the lever is turned to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1, the free end of the binding cord or wire is relaxed, thus releasing the cover-2 and permitting it to be readily removed. In this operation, the lever is thrown forward of its pivotal connection, as will be readily understood. When the lever is thrown rearward of its pivotal connection, as illustrated in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, the free end of the binding cord or wire is drawn taut to clam the cover 2 firmly within the groove 3, anc, as the point of connection of said lever with the link fastening the cord or wire thereto lies in rear of the ivotal connection and the link also exten s on a line between the adjacent ed e of the board and the fulcrumed end of the Tever, it will be under stood that the tension u on the lever from the taut cord or wire wil hold the lever in fastening position, whereby it is rendered self-locking.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing, the construction, mode of o eration and advantages of the device will e appreciated, it being apparent that a simple and inexpensive construction of means is provided for firmly fastening the cover and permitting of its instant release when required.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
In combination with an ironing board having an edge groove, a band secured at one end to' the board and adapted for clamping the edge of a cover within the groove, a removable supportirig pin having a screw-threaded shank engaging the board and formed with a bifurcated head provided with a pivot pin extending between the arms of the bifurcation, a lever having a partially closed hook at one end fitting in the bifurcation and pivotally engaging said pin and provided in rear of said hooked end with op ositely extending lateral arms each provided with an annular an vflv x'su groove, and a U-shaped link connected at its In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature return portion to the free end of the bend and in presence of two Witnesses. havmg its arms formed with eyes plvotally NELLIE PERRY.
