RAIL-FASTENER.
. speeieationef Letters patent.
Patented June 9, 190s.
i Application filed May 14, 1907. Serial No. 373,526.
ATo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JoHANEs ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hatton, in the county of Traill, State of North Dakota, have invented certain. new and use ful 'Improvements in Rail-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
this character embodying a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts.
The details of construction will appear in the course of the following description, in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings for like characters o reference designating similar parts, throughout the several views,
wherein:
Figure 1 is -a top plan view illustrating. the
manner of use of .a rail'fastener constructed inaccordance with' the present invention,
V which spikes 3 are passed to secure the base lio yblock to the tie.
The block 1 is formed at one side thereof with 'a raised lug 4, having an o'verhanging lip 5, and at a point opposite t0 said lipi with an opening 6, which, adjacent the underneath face of the tie, is eX- tended inwardly as at 7. rlhe opening 6 is .of sufficient width to accommodate a rail clamp 8 and an adjusting key 9. The clamp 8 -is constructed with an inwardly rojecting lip 10 having a bevel underneath ace 11 for engagement with one flange of the rail Bhthe other flange of which is engaged by the'lip 5 which in general conformation is similar to a part of this specification,I
the lip 10. The clamp 8 at its lower end is constructed with an extension 12 formedv to fit into the recess extension 7.
rihe outer face of the clamp 8, designated by the numeral 13, is preferably constructed with a Wedge incline so that when thekey 9 is inserted in the recess 6, it willforce the clamp 8 intol tight engagement with the rail in the manner described. The said key is constructed with a head 9 and with shoulders 14 at each side of said head.
At one side of the bed 1 .is a casing.l 15 which is mounted a slidable latch member 16, the latter being forced inwardly by a spring 17 and having one end projected through an opening 18 in the end of the casing 15, the
' projecting end aHording means whereby the atch member 16 may be manually displaced.
In use, the parts are assembled as described and the latch member 16 has its working portion engaged with the shoulder 14 of one side of the head 9', thereby preventing accidental displacement of the key 9 y from the opening 6 in the assembled relation of arts.
hould it be vdesiredfor any reason to remove therail sections B for substitution or repairs, the latches 16 are manually displaced and the keys 9 successively drawn from the openings 6 throughout the length of the rails. The rail f astener. embodied in e the present inventionis simple in construction, inexpensive to manufactureand practical and efficient in use.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and efficient means `are provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements herein shown and describedare well adapted to serve the function set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the-proportions, shape and arrangement of .the several parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is: l
A rail fastener ofthe type set forth comprisinga bed block constructed with an overanging lip, with an'opening at a point opposite to said lip, said opening `having an inward extension communicating with the lower face'of said bled block, a clamp disposed sible spring pressed latch member for engagein said opening and having an inwardly pointment with said shoulder.v v 10 ing lip confronting said last named lip and an In testimony whereof, I aiiXvmy signature extension forme-d to engage in the extension in presence of two Witnesses of 'said opening, a keydisposed insaid open- JOE ANDERSON. ing bearing against, the outer face of said Witnesses: clamp, said key being constructed with a CEAS. A. LYCEE,
shoulder at one side thereof, and a displace- ED COLE.
