JOHN RALPH GRAFF, OF INDIANA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED RAIL CHAIR AND FASTENER.
' Patented July 2, 1912.
" 7 -.l1p1i1ication filed. August 26, 1911, Serial No. 646,170. Renewed May 9, 1912. Serial No. 696,282.
Toall whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN RALPH GRAFF,
acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Indiana, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Rail Chairs and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
. This invention relates to combined rail chair and fastener, and has for its object to provide a device of such class in a manner as hereinafter set forth for ctlicientlysupporting a rail upon a tie and, further, to preventlateral and longitudinal displacement of the rail.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a combined rail chair and fastener in a manner as hereinafter set forth with means whereby 'a rail can be conveniently secured to the chair and disconnectedtherefrom when occasion so requires.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a combined rail chair and fastener which is comparatively simple in its combination and arrangement, strong, durable, efiicient in its use, readily connected to a tie, and comparatively inexpensive in its manufacture.
With the foregoing,'and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that charges, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in wlnch-- Figure is a perspective view of a portion of a solid tie showing the adaptation therewith of a combined rail chair and fastener in accordance with this invention, the fas-' tener being shown as applied to a rail, the latter being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a combined rail chair and fastener in accordance with this invention showing the adaptation thereof in connection with a metallic tie. Fig. 3 a section on line IIT III of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is an inverted perspective View of the fastener.
A combined rail chair and. fastener in accordance with this invention can be used in connection with a solid tie or a metallic tie; the former may be constructed of wood or other suitable material, and the latter may be of the ordinary channel form or of any other suitable construction.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings1 denotes a wooden tie which has secured thereto, through the medium of the spikes 2, 3, a combined rail chair and fastener in accordance with this invention, and referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings 4 denotes a hollow metallic tie, which includes a. double wall and which has secured thereto a'combined rail chair and fastener in accordance with this invention, through the medium of vertically extending bolts 5, 6 and nuts 7, these latter being mounted upon the upper ends of the bolt, and engaging-with the top of the combined rail chair and fastener.
The combined rail chair and fastener includes a haseplate 8 having one side thereof provided with an openin 9 for the passage of a spike or bolt, depen ing upon whether the chair is used in connection with a solid tie or a metallic tie.
Integral with the top of the plate 8 in proximity to the opening 9 is a stationary fastener iiicluding a base portion 10 and a vertical portion 11, the former is adapted to overlap one side of the base 12 of the rail referred to generally bythe reference character 13 and the latter is adapted to engage the web 14 of the rail 13 and the lower face of the head 15 of the rail. The base 10 of the stationary fastener in connection with the base plate 8 provides a pocket 16 for one side of the base 12 ofthe rail 13.
The base plate 8 opposite that end provided with the opening 9, is formed with a pair of openings 17, 18; the latter is for the passage of a spike 2 or a bolt, while the.
ness than said body portion 20, thereby pro viding a shoulder 23; the latter being rvcd as at 24 to form a cam surface. The inclined portion'22 of the shiftabl'e fastener terminates in a vertically disposed portion The manner of setting up the combined chair and fastener for connecting the track rail 13 with the tie consists in mounting the chair and fastener upon the tie and then securing it thereto through the medium of .a spike or bolt which extends through the opening 9. The shiftable fastener isthen moved so'that the inclined portion 22 and vertical portion 23 will not be over the base plate 8, the rail is then mounted uponthe base plate with one side of the base of the rail in the socket-1G.- The shiftable-fastener is then moved until the cam surface engages one longitudinal edge of the rail base where by the inclined portion 22 will overlap one side of the railbase and the vertical portion 23 will engage the web and lower face of the head of the track rail. "When the shiftable fastener has been moved to the position just stated, the opening :21 will register with the" opening 18. A spike or bolt is then passed through the registered openings and which not only connects the base plate 8 to the tie, but also secures the shiftable fastener in the position to which it has been moved. When the parts are in the position as stated, the track rail is coupled with the tie and is prevented from lateral and'longitudinal displacement.
What I claim is 1. A combined rail chair and fastener Gopies of this patent may be obtained for comprising a base plate, ,a stationary fastener integral with one side of said plate and adapted to engage the-base, web and a head of a rail, a shiftable' fastener pivotally mounted upon said base plate and movable -to engage the base, Web and head of the means locking said shiftable fastener in po- 7 sition.
2. A combined rall chairand fastener comprising a base plate adapted ..to be.
mounted upon a tie, a stationary fastener integral with said baseplate and 'engageable with one side of a rail, ashiftable fastener pivotally mounted upon the other end of said' base plate and engageable with the other side of the rail, said shiftable fastener provided with a cam surface adapted to engage a longitudinal edge of the rail for clamping the rail toprevent lateral and longitudinal displacement. thereof," means for securing one end of the base plate to the tie, and means for securing the otherend of the base plate ;to the tie, said 'last mentioned means constitutinga lock to prevent movement of the shiftab le fastener when its cam surface is in engagement with the longitu dinal. end of the rail. 1
In testimony whereof I afiix'my signature in the presence of. twowitnesses. I JOHN RALPH GRAFF. Witnesses: I
