Description

B. A. GRASBBRGER. GOAT HANGER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 25, 19084 UNHED STATES PATENT onnrcn BONIFACE A.v GRASBERGER, OF RICHMOND, YIRGIVNHI. i
' i GOAT-HANGER.
To altwhom-it may concern: v
Be it known that .I, BoNiFAon A. GRAS- nERGEa citizen of the United States, residing at RichmondJ in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coat- Hangers, of which the following is a speciiicatiom The present invention relates to apparel apparatus and morel articularly-to an improved coat hanger w ich ispeculiarly constructed so as to automatically accommodate itself to any shape .of coat, whether round or square shouldered 'so as. to permit the coat to han without wrinkles.'
T e object 'of the invention is to. design a coat hanger of this character which is simple and inexpensive in its construction and ,can
be utilized in the ordinary manner, v
For afull. description of the invention and the meritsr' thereof and also to acquire al knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting'the result, referencel -is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a coat hanger embodying the invention. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the same ortlons being re- ,moved; Fig. 3 is asectiona view on the line modification.
hanger comprises a supporting frame havingl .hook
3-3 of Fig. 1.*- Fig. lis a sectional view through a portion of a coat hanger showing a Corresponding and like parts are referred to. in the followin description and indicated in all the views o the, drawings bythe same reference characters.
Broadly 'speaking the coat or garment lshown in the present instance eachnof the shoulder pieces 3 is provided at an intermediate oint with a recess 4 receiving the cross har oi) a U-shaped clip 5 which 1s pivoted within the recess, the Width of thevrecess beingtggreater than that of the cross vhartol Specification of Letters Patent.

shoulder piece and the said swinging move-f ment being-limited by the shoulders it oppor-f,
site ends oi the recess? 4lilachfof these clips-5-AA 60 is pivotally connected'to'ian endflot'fthe-vbar 1 n i. i
by means of a pin -7-"passing1 throughifa-f'see lected one of.a series of openings 8, the said clips permitting the shoulder pieces to swing in a vertical plane and also enabling the same A to be moved toward oi' :away from each other so as to accommodate both large and small coats. It will thus be apparent that both of the shoulder pieces are adapted to permita' lateral swinging movement the" A swing laterallv about their pivotal connection with the clips 5 and also in connection with the said clips to swingvertically.
Vhen-a coat o`r other garment is placed upon the hanger the shoulder pieces 3 automatically adjust themselves to the particular form of 'the coat and permit the same t-o hang without wrinkles. It may also be found desirable under some conditions to provide the bar 1 with hooks 6 for engaging the buttons of 'a this is entirely optional with the person using the invention. While l have described a `speciiic embodiment of the invention in which the shoulder pieces are connected to air of trousers, although the bar `by'means of clips, it is to be under- 85 stood that I do not limit myself to such a construction since it is clearly within the 'spirit of the invention to employ-any equiva-y lent means for mounting the shoulder pieces so that they vwill be enabled to automatically adjust themselves to the coat in the manner described.
A modification of the invention is shown in Fig, 4 in which the numeral 1a designates a portion 'of the supporting frame and 3d a 95 portion of the shoulder-'piecej Projecting downwardly from. an intermediate ortion Aof the shoulder-piece.3a is a lug 9 vcaringagainstthe supporting lframe la and adapted to rock upon the same. n, A screw 10 is 100' threaded within this lug 9 and projects downwardly through anopening 11 in the supporting frame, vthe said opening being iared downwardlyv to permit the lower portion of the screw/to have 4a swinging move- 105 nient within the opening as the shoulderpiece rocks upon the frame. In the present instance a washer'12 is applied-to the screw 10 and bears loosely against the lower face 'of thesupporting frame la so as to prevent 110 the hea-d of 'the screw from being drawn upwardly into-the lared'end of the opening 1l.
This 'manner of connecting the shoulderpieces to the supporting'frame entirely eliminatos any intermediate member such as the clip 5 and at the saine time permits the shoulder-piece to swing both laterally/.and vertically so asl to readilyv accommodate itself to any shape of coat. y. v
Having thus described the invention, what "a claimed as new is:
1. A garment hanger 'coml rising a transverse bar, and a. shoulder-piece 4mounted upon each end o'f the bei', lthe saidshoulderpieces being adapted to swing about two axes at rightangles to each other.
2. A Garment hanger c'olnprisinflr a su; porting iiame and shoulder pieces adjustale upon the frame so as to be moved toward or pieces being.,r mount-ed toens-ing-l about two axes :it anglesto each other.`
8. In a garment hanger, the eombinetion of a supporting freine, clips pivotally coni ncctled to the freine, and a shoulder-piece ,pivotally mounted upon eacli-'ofthe clips to In testimony whereof 'I affix my signature in presence ol two witnesses.
