'KEIBOABD-COVER FOB TYPE-WRITERS.
Patented May 26, 1908.'
. Application filed November 26, 1906.- Serial No. 345,010.
To all whom ti may concern:
Be it known that I, ADELBERT L GILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and-useful Improvements in Keyboard- Covers for,
the operator is learning the so-called touch,
system.
Heretofore, screens for such pur ose have been connected with and supporte from the back or one of theside's of the machine, but when made to be thus supported with one style of a machine they cannot inmany in- .s tances be used with other styles of machines as they. are liable to be in the wayof the carriage or other parts of the machine. V
The object of my resent 'invention is therefore more especial y to provide a screen that is equally adapted to be used in connection with all ordinary typewriters, regardless of their style of construction, and which may be adjusted at'any desired-angle to the keyboard, and may also, if desired, be used for supporting manuscript which is being copied by theoperator.
My invention isexplained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which, 1
Figure 1 is a side view of the device attachedto a machine, 'and Fig. 2 is a rear 1 View thereof.
Like parts are identified by the same reference letters in both'views. 4
A represents the screen which is adj-ustably supported from the'machine B above the keyboard C by the standard D: ,Y-Vhile it-has heretofore been common a'sstated to. connect the screen supporting standard atone of the sides or at the backof themachine, the standard I) of my device is constructed and adapted to be attachedto the front of the machine, centrally between thelrespe'ctive sides of the key-board.- Experience has proven that when the shield supporting standard is thus connected, it is not only not in the way of the hands of the ope'ratorras may have previously been supposed 'rt' the slot K is such as to would be, both serves an additional useful purpose in compelling the operator to operate only those keys with each hand that good practice requires him to operate, and the temptation to manipulate morekeys with the right hand than the left or more with one. hand than the other when learning to operate the machine is prevented and the operator is required to practice in such a manner as will make him most proficient when the art has been once proper y mastered. H I To facilitate attaching my device to a machine, I preferably provide the lower end of the standard Dwith a clamping bracket E which is adapted to engage thavertical wall F of the key-boardwhen 1t is temporarily secured in lace by the clamping screws G, the bracket E by screws H. .The shield-A is adjustably secured to the up er end of the'standard D by a plurality of c amping screws I and shield retaini flanges J, J. The screws I have closely tting apertures in the flanges J and are centrally connected with the standard D in the elon ated slot K. The slot K is preferably ma e wider than the clamping screws I and permits ofsuch lateral adjustment therein as may be necessary to change the inclination of the shield A to the bearingsurface of the standard D, while the length'of ermit the sh eld A to be adjustedhigher or ower in its relation to the bracket as may be required to best obstruct the line of vision between pupils of different hei hts or to support manuscript in the most esirable position for the operator.
The lower side of the shield A is provided with an-angular flange L for the purpose of preventing the manuscript which is supported thereon from sliding off its lower side. It will be obvious that by this construction the shield A is not only adapted to be ad'usted.
in its relative position to thelstandard but the entire device may, by releasing the clamp G, be readily removed from the It will also be obvious-that if deing screws machine.
sirous toattachthe shield to a machine which is not adapted for the reception of the being secured to the standard D bracket E,-.said bracket may be,,removed.
from .the'standard -D by withdrawing the screws H, when the standard D may be connected with the machine by the .screws H and the bracket E dispensed Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. The combination of a typewriting machine, a Vertical standard centrally located between the sides of the key-board and extending upwardly above the key-board in -of the machine.
2. The combination with a typewriting machine, of a screen supporting standard provided at its upper end with an elongated slot, a screen provided with a retaining bracket, adapted to engage the respective sides of the up er end of said standard, a pair of clamping b0 ts supported from said'bracket within the slot of said standard and adapted to secure said bracket and screen at any de- 7 sired point of adjustment in relation to said supporting standard, and means for connecting the lower end of said standard to the front of the typewriter, all substantially as and forthe purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ADELBERT L. GILBERT.
