T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER E. SUTTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunkirk, in the county of Jay and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to padlocks, and has particular reference to combination or permutation padlocks, the object primarily being to provide a device of the character above generally stated which shall be simple in construction, cheap of manufacture, easy of operation, one not liable to become out of order and yet which shall be highly efficient in use. In locks of this type no keys or other auxiliary devices are employed, each device being complete in itself.
For a full understanding of the invention, including its mode of operation and advantages, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and in which Figure 1 is a general perspective view of the padlock in locked position; Fig. 2 is a vertical central transverse section Fig. 3 is a side elevation with certain parts removed to show more clearly the interior construction; Fig. 4 is a face view of one disk and its hub; Fig. 5 is a detail view of the shackle and screws detached, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective of a modified form of shackle.
Corresponding parts in the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the body of the lock which is of circular or disklike formation, and is provided with a central trunnion 11. Extending longitudinally through the trunnion and centrally thereof is a tappet bore 12, and extending radially outward from said bore in one direction to the ed e of the body 10 is a slot 13. At the edge 0 the body 10 and at a short distance from the outer extremity of the slot 13 is a notch 14. Located within the said slot 13 is a shackle 15, one end of which is located within the trunnion 11 and the other or free end cooperates with the'periphery of the body 10 whereby the shackle becomes closed when the lock is in operation. Said free end of the shackle may be hinged or pivoted to the main por tion of the shackle in order that a larger and freer opening may be provided when the lock In this form of the invention the free end 16 cooperates with the notch 14 to insure a more positive connection between the shackle and body when locked. When the shackle is in locked position the lower end 15 thereof extends within the aforesaid bore 12.
A series ofdisks 17, 17*, 17 and 17 are fitted for rotation upon said trunnion 11 of the body. The exact relationship as to location between the said disks and the body 10 is not material, but as indicated herein two are mounted on each side'thereof. It will of course be understood furthermore that the exact number of said disks may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention. The aforesaid disks are all of the same diameter preferably, and are each mounted upon a hub 18 which is journaled directly upon the trunnion 11. Each hub is provided with a notch 18, and when all of the disks are rotated so as to bring the notches '18 all in line with one another and in registry with the shackle 15, the shackle may be moved outwardly radially with respect to the body bringing the shackle into the notches 18 and thereby opening the loop of the shackle. The several disks are provided on their peripheries with distinguishing marks or characters, preferably in the form of letters or numerals, and by the use of which the proper combination may be secured in the practical operation of the padlock. If letters are used it may be desirable to arrange the combination upon the occasion of the characters spelling a Word, although such arrangement is not obligatory. In order toin-- crease the range of probabilities of the lock each hub 18 is formed with a polygonal periphery. The exact form of such periphery may be varied at the will of the manufacturer, the form shown being that of an octagon. Whether or not such form be of a polygon, it is preferable that the outline be of some regular form, the purpose being for the combination to be changed by the simple removal of any one or more of the disks and replacing them upon the hubs in new positions, the extent of rotation of each disk relative to its hub to effect such change may be to any point less than a complete rotation.
It will be understood that while it is essential that all of the hubs 18 shall be so arranged that their notches 18 shall be in alinement and in registry with the shackle 15, the position of the indicating letters or characters on the peripheries of the disks may vary according to the desire of the owner, and in this fact the number of variations or probabilities may be greatly increased.
The disks and hubs are secured in lace upon the trunnion 11 by meansof face p ates 19, one at each end of the trunnion, and said face plates are held in place snugly against the ends of the trunnion by means of screws 20 of peculiar form, each being provided at its inner end with a groove 20. In assembling the device the shackle, hubs, disks, and face plates are put in position with relation to the body 10 and trunnion 11, the shackle being located within the notches 18, the screws 20 are then driven into the bore 12 securing the face plates to the trunnion. The
inner or key portion 15 of the shackle may then be seated within the grooves 20 of the screws, allowing the disks and hubs freedom for rotation upon the trunnion. In this position the shackle performs the dual function, viz., locking the screws from rotation, preventing disassembly of the lock, and also the shackle cooperating with the body 10 and unnotched portions of the hubs to effect the purpose for which the lock is intended.
The form of the shackle may be varied within certain limits with respect to its cooperation with the screws 20. For instance as indicated in Fig. 6 the inner margin of the shackle 15 is not notched to form a short tongue or key 15 but maintains its full breadth throughout its length, in which case the grooves 20 of the'screws would be deepened accordingly. It will also be observed that the outer end of the shackle may be rigid if desired, instead of being hinged, and such form is illustrated also in Fig. 6. In any case the shackle must move radially sufficiently far upon entering the notches 18 so as to allow the extreme end of the shackle to be free from the margin of the body 10 and also to completely withdraw the key 15 or inner margin thereof from contact with the screws.
From the foregoing detail description of the device it will be observed that I have provided a device which may be constructed cheaply and which may be manipulated readily by any one who knows the combination.
The materials from which the device may be constructed may be varied according to the desire of the manufacturer or the demands of the trade to be supplied.
A device of this character may be cheaply constructed of metal, the most of the parts being adapted to be stamped out of stock sheet metal.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The herein described combination padlock comprising, in combination, a disk like body portion having a central trunnion projecting transversely therefrom, the body and trunnion being radially slotted, a
shackle slidably mounted in said slot, a
series of notched hubs rotatably mounted on said trunnion, a series of indicator disks mounted upon said hubs to determine the position of the hubnotches with respect to the shackle, and means to secure the disks and hubs upon the trunnion, the said shackle operating to lock said securing means when the padlock is closed.
2. A combination padlock comprising, in combination, a body portion having a central transverse trunnion, the trunnion having a tapped longitudinal bore, and there being provided a slot extending radially outward from said bore to the periphery of the said body, a shackle in said slot extending from the bore outwardly and terminating in a loop, a series of indicator disks and notched hubs fitted rotatably upon the trunnion, the shackle being movable out wardly to open the loop when the hub notches are in alinement with one another and in registry with the shackle, and means including screws to secure said disks and hubs upon the trunnion, the screws being driven into the aforesaid tapped bore and being grooved to receive the inner end of the shackle when the latter is in locked position.
3. In a combination padlock, the combi nation of a circular body portion having a central transverse trunnion, indicator means journaled 011 the said trunnion, means cooperating with the ends of the trunnion to prevent removal of said indicator means, and a slidable shackle cooperating with said removal preventing means to lock the same when the shackle is in locked position.
4-. A combination padlock comprising, in combination, a disk like body having a centrally bored and tapped trunnion projecting laterally therefrom, a plurality of interchangeable indicator disks and hubs journaled on said trunnion, means including a screw to secure said indicator means upon the trunnion, the screw being grooved and extending into the said trunnion bore. and a lock shackle extending from the said bore radially outward to and beyond the periphery of the body and in one position cooperating with the groove in the screw to lock the latter in position.
5.
