To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, FREDRICK A. MAG WIRE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Havre, in the county of Chouteau and State of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Straw-Chute and Draft --Appliance, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This inventionis designed to provide means simple in construction, effective in operation and durable in use, adapted to be detachably secured to the furnace of a traction boiler and enable straw and material of a light character to be used for fuel in the furnace when desired.
Such objects l accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention applied to the Vboiler of a traction engine, shown in end elevation, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the feeding device shown in Fig. 1, showing the device attached to the furnace as when in operation.-
As illustrated in the drawing, a boiler 1 of a traction engine is provided with a furnace door-way 2 of usual construction. A chute casing 3 is pivotally attached to the end of the boiler by means of hinge pins 4, and preferably provided on its inner end With a flange 5 adapted to bear against the end of A latch 6 is connected with the inner end of the chute casing adapted to engage a keeper 6a attached to the end of the boiler, so as to lock the casing in position opposite the furnace door when in The chute casing is provided on its interior with a trap door 7 supported on a hinge pin 8, as shown in Fig. 2. A draft chamber {is formed on the chute casing by means of the bottom 9 of the chute, a base plate 12 and side walls 13. The inner end of the base plate 12 projects beyond the end of the chute, and the bottom 9 of the chute projects at one end beyond the end of the chute and preferably beyond the adjacent end of the base plate 12, thereby form ing an air chamber leading from the atmosphere into the furnace of the boiler. The base plate 12 of the air chamber is held in place by means of a brace or block 14. A door 15 is hinged to the end of the draft casing by means of rods 16, and provided with a handle 17 adapted to engage the teeth of a notched segment 18 secured to the outer side of the casing.
When the device is in operation, the chute is closed on the end of the boiler, as shown in Fig. 2, and the straw passed into the furnace through the open end of the chute, the hinged door 7 thereof preventing the flame and gases from passing outward. When fuel other than straw and similar material is to be burned in the furnace, the chute 4 is re movedy from its hinged connection with the boiler and a furnace door of ordinary construction used in its stead.
The door 15 of the draft chamber is adapted by the means hereinbefore described to regulate the flow of air into the furnace as may be required. The air entering through the draft chamber is deflected by means of the inner end of the base plate 9 of the chute, the projecting inner end of the bottom 12 of the air casing also serving the same pur ose, but the inner end of the bottom 9 of the c ute is preferably extended into the fire boX further than the end of the base plate 12, as shown in Fig. 2.
What l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. A straw chute and draft ap liance comprising a casing, a door pivotaFly mounted within the casing, a draft chamber projecting at one end beyond said casing, and a door pivoted to the opposite end of the draft chamber.
2. A straw chute and draft appliance comrising a casing provided on one end with a ange, a door pivotally mounted Within the casing, a draft chamber projecting at one end beyond the flange of said casing, and a door pivoted to the opposite end of the draft chamber.
3. A straw chute and draft appliance comprising a casing having a iiange on one end7 a door pivotally mounted within the casing, a draft chamber projecting at one end beyond said casing, and having its top plate projecting beyond its bottom plate, and a door piv oted to the opposite end of said chamber.
4.
