UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS SHULMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DETACHABLE CUFF FOR COATS.
To all whom it may concern:
tk Be it known that I, LOUIS SI-IULMAN, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Cuffs for Coats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs.
In the sale of ready-made clothing it is desirable that the lower ends of coat sleeves be provided with a detachable cuff in order that the garment may be sold with or without the cuff as suits the taste of the purchaser. I have invented such a detachable cuff which is attractive in appearance, which can readily be removed from the coat to which it is attached, and which utilizes the buttons near the outer corner of the sleeve which are customarily provided for ornamental purposes as means for attaching the detachable cuff.
In the accompanying drawings Figure I, represents in perspective the lower end of a coat sleeve provided with a detachable cuff embodying my invention. Fig. II, is a transverse section of the same. Fig. III, is a perspective view, similar in character to Fig. I, and exhibiting a modified form of my invention. Fig. IV, is a transverse section of the same modification.
In Fig. I, is the lower part, 1, of an ordinary coat sleeve provided with buttons 2, 2, A detachable cuff, 3, preferably formed exteriorly of the same material as the coat, completely surrounds the lower end of the coat sleeve. Its lower edge, 4, is suitably finished and preferably extends slightly beyond the lower edge of the sleeve. Its upper edge, 5, may be made of any suitable contour as customary in the edging of coat cuffs. The detachable cufi" is formed of two thicknesses, an outer cloth, 8, and an inner lining, 9, as seen in Fig. II. At the roper place the cuff is provided with button oles, 10, corresponding to and engaging with the buttons 2, 2, which thus secure it in lace on the sleeve, but in addition to these uttons which only secure one side of the cloth in place, it is desirable that there shall be other and supplemental fastening means. These may vary 1n character, but I prefer to Specification of Letters Patent.

employ a button, 12, which is sewed upon the coat sleeve near its lower end at an approximate point, and which engages a button hole formed in the lining of the detachable cuff, but which does not penetrate the cuff. In this way when the cuff is in place this latter button is wholly concealed, and at the same time, in the case of a wearer who does not desire to use the cuff, the button is readily out off leaving the coat sleeve perfect.
In Figs. III, and IV, I have illustrated an application of my invention in which the cuff instead of completely encircling the lower edge of the sleeve, only partially encircles it. In this case in addition to the buttons 2, 2, I provide buttons 15, 15, for securing the other edge of the cuff and also button, 13, which may engage only the lining of the cuff (as in the first form which I have described) or may ass through it as shown in the drawings. f the wearer of the coat does not desire to employ the cuff, all
of these buttons may be removed except those retained for ornamentation.
It will be understood, of course, that the form of my detachable cuff may vary according to the taste of the wearer and also that other methods of attaching the cuff to the coat than those which I have shown may be employed. It will also be understood that my invention is applicable to all varieties of coats, such for instance as ordinary suits, over-coats, ladies coats, fur coats, automobile coats, rain coats, top coats and others.
Having thus described my invention I claim I 1. A coat the sleeve of which is provided at its extremity with an outer detachable cuff, together with means for detachably securing the same to the outside of the sleeve, whereby when said cuff is removed the sleeve is still complete.
2. As a new article of manufacture, an outer detachable coat sleeve cuff consisting of a cuff portion wholly separable from the sleeve and provided with means for attaching the same to the sleeve.
3. A coat sleeve provided with ornamental buttons, near its outer corner in combination With a detachable cull formed of the same material asltlie 00151411,) but sleplarable there from, rovin ec Wit utton 10 es for en a w ing the buttons of the coat sleeve, said sle ee LOUIS bHULMAN' 5 belng still complete when said eufl is re- Witnesses: I i moved. JAMES H. BELL, I
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto E. L. FULLERTON.
signed my name, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this sixteenth day of December, 1907.
