HANDLE FOR SHOVELS, 85c.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26, 1908.
Application filed June 20, 1907. Serial No. 379,856.
Be it known that I FREDERIeK SKErrroN, a citizen of the United .States,.residing at Hamilton, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Shovels, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, andexact description.
My invention relates to improvements in handles for shovels, spades, and other tools in'which there is an elongated or vertical member the upper end of which is bifurcated and a transverse hand member fitted between the arms of the said bifurcated end.
The objects of my invention are to provide 'a handle wherein the several parts'are neatly fitted together and rigidly held wherein means are provided to materially strengthen the handle around the commencement of the Figure 1 is a front elevation ofthe upper end of the handle; 2 is a side elevation of the same ,Fig. 3 isa view similar to Fig. '1,
partly in section ;-Fig. 4'is a perspective view of the socket member for uniting the transverse member to one of the arms of the bifur.-.
rivet hole. 'width, as shown in Fig. 2, and upon their.
cated end of the handle; and Fig. 5 is a sec.- tional detail View of said socket; I
As shown the drawing, the improved handle comprises an elongated .member- 1, the upper end of which is bifurcated to form arms 2, 2. At the point where the bifurcationbegins, a rivet 3, is placed to prevent splitting of the member 1, and'the'thickness and cross section of the member 1 is greater, around the rivet 3 than at other points of'the' handle, whereby its strength is unimpaired by the removal of the material to fornathe The arms 2are, of diminishing ends are fitted the socket'members 4,-which,
as shown, are shells formed with upper and ,I claim, is:
lower 0 enings 5 and 6 respectively throu h which t e ends of the arms 2 extend. The opening 6 is slightly larger than the opening 5, whereby a socket is formed which tapers in the same de ree as the endof the arm 2,so
' that the sec et members 4 may be forced into firm engagement with the ends of said arms. Each socket member 4 also comprises a ,fiat ring 7, which is adapted to receive the reduced end- 8, of the transverse hand member 9 (see Fig. 3), so as to prevent any ossible displacement of said transverse mem er and an outer wall or web 11 extending continuously from onepart of the ring 7 to another diametrically opposite part of the same; -,A bolt 1Q is then inserted to bind the sockets 4, arms 2, and hand member 9 firmly together, the ends of said bolt being upset; to form a rivet whichenga es the wall 11 of preferably of wood and the grain runslongitudinally thereof, which gives it maximum strength, and also makes it easy for the hand.
Having now-described my'invention, what the socketmei'nber 4. The andmember Qis 1. A handle forw'shovelsand the like coinprising an elongated member having a bifu'r cated end the arms of which are tapered, a
transverse hand member' between the ends of said arms, and a' air of soeket'members each formed with a'rlng into which one end of said transverse memberis fitted, and a web with upper and lower openings 5 and 6 of different size into which is wedged one of said .ta ered-arms, said web extending continuous y around said arm from one side of the ring to the other. i
2. ,A'handle for shovels and the like comprising an elongatedmember having a'bifurcated end, the armslof which are tapered, a
formed with a ring into which one end of said transverse me beris fitted, and a web with upper and lowe openingsfi'and '6 ofdiflerent size into which is wedged ;one of said tapered arms, said web extending continuously around said, arm from one side of the ring to the other, and abolt passing through said webs, arms andhand member.
transverse hand member between the ends of said arms, a pair, of socket members each;
3. In a handle for shovels and the like,a 11 connecting diametrically opposite parts socket member consisting of a, shell. having of said socket. 10 upper and lower openings 5 and 6, said lower In witness whereof, I subscribe my signaopening being larger than said upper'openture, in the presence of two witnesses.
