DEVICE FOR OPERATING WINDOVFBLINDS.

Beit known that I, DANIEL F. LONERGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Morristown, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Device for Operating indow-Blinds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7
This invention is an improvement in'shut ter closers and openers of the character described in Letters Patent No. 865,922, granted to me September 10, 1907, and in which the blind or shutter is operated from the inside of the house.
The object of the present invention is to simplify the construction and provide in connection with the principal bearing thereof, a stop which is adjustable relative to the shut ter, whereby the latter may be prevented from swinging beyond the desired point in its opening movement.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a window-shutter and the adjacent building, with my imroved shutter-opener and closer applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through the principal bearing of the device; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the wall of the building, showing the operating mechanism; Fig. 4 is a plan of the principal bearing of the device partly broken away; Fig. 5 is a vertical section, on the line 55 of Fig. 3, through the lower portion of the Window-blind and window-sill, illustrating the manner in which my improvements are applied to the shutter and Fig. 6 is a cross-section through a plate and its guides, for closing the opening through which the push-bar passes. In the preferred construction of my improved device, I employ a crank composed of the crank- arms 10 and 11, connected together by the crank-pin 12, which isj ournaled in a bearing secured to the outer wall of the building in substantial axial alinement with the shutter hinges. This bearing is com? posed of a cup 13 and a flanged disk 14: seated thereover, the cup being rigid with a plate 15 provided with screw-holes or other suitable fastening means for securing it in place. It will be observed from Fig. 6 that the cup is provided with a race-way in which Specification of Letters Patent.

The crank-arm 10 at its outer end carries an off-set or U-shaped portion 17 to clear the wind.owsill, as shown in Fig. 5, the free end of said off-set portion being suitably attached to the outer face of the shutter.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the cup 13 of the bearing is provided with an inwardlydirected pin or projection 18, arranged in the path of a shoulder 19, formed by cutting away one side of the disk 14 on its under face. The disk 14 is also rigid with a socket 20, provided with a square, or other form of angular opening, for detachably receiving the end of the crank-arm 10, the crank-pin 12 being secured by a pin or other suitable device to the socket. The wall of the building under the bearing is provided with an outwardlyflaring horizontal slot 21, through which passes a push-bar 22, which is journaled at its outer end on the downwardly-turned extremity of the crank-arm 11. The push-bar 2 passes through a closure-plate 23 slidable in guides 24, and operates to keep the slot 21 closed in any position of the shutter, whereby cold air is prevented from entering the room. The guide 24, as shown in Fig. 6, threadedly receives a thumb-screw 25 which binds on the top edge of the closure-plate and thus prevents the shifting of the operatingbar. By this construction it is apparent that on operating the bar 22 from the inside of the room, the shutter is caused to swing on its hinges, and is limited in its opening movement by the contact of the shoulder 19 with the pin or projection 18. This shoulder, when the wall of the building is straight adjacent to the blind, will ordinarily be set to bring the blind to a stop when it has com- 9 pleted substantially a half revolution. If, however, a chimney, bay window or the like, be located in such a position as to interfere with the full opening of the blind, the crankarm 10 is removed from the socket 20 of the disk 14 and the latter given a quarter revolution, should the opening in the socket be square, after which this crank-arm is replaced. It is evident that the angular opening in the socket may be made in hexagonal or other angular form such that the disk 14 may be adjusted. relative to the socket to bring the shutter to a stop at a variety of positions.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a device for operating window-shutters, a crank comprising crank-arms and a connecting crankpin, a fiXed bearing in which the crank-pin is journaled, means for connecting one of said arms to the shutter, and a push-bar for operating the crank, connected to the opposite arm.
2. In a device for operating window-shutters, a crank comprising crank-arms and a connecting crank-pin, a fixed bearing in which the crank-pin is journaled, a stop provided on said bearing for limiting the movement of the shutter, and means connected with the other crank-arm for operating the crank.
3. The combination of a building having a hinged shutter, a bearing secured to the outer wall of the building in aXial alinement with the hinges of the shutter, a crank comprising crank-arms connected together by a crankpin which is carried by said bearing, means connecting one of said arms to the shutter, and means for operating the crank, passing through an opening in the wall of the buildmg.
4. In a device for operating window-shutters, a crank comprising crank-arms and a crank-pin made in two sections adjustably connected together, a fixed bearing in which said crank-pin is journaled, means for connecting one of said arms to the shutter, means connected to the other of said arms for operating the crank, and a stop provided in connection with said bearing for limiting the opening movement of the shutter.
5. In a device for operating window-shutters, a bearing comprising a cup having a pro jection on the inside thereof, and a disk revolubly mounted over said cup, having a shoulder movable in the path of said projection, a crank comprising crank-arms and a connecting crank-pin, secured to said disk,
means for connecting one of said arms to the shutter, and means connected to the other of said arms for operating the crank.
6. In a device for operating window-shutters, a cup adapted to be fiXed to the wall of the building, having a race-way in the upper face thereof provided with bearing-balls, a disk revolubly mounted over said cup and seated on said balls, means for limiting the movement of the disk relative to the cup, a socket carried by the disk having an angular opening, a crank comprising crank-arms and a crank-pin, said crank-pin being made in two sections, one of which is rigid with the socket and the other being adjustably connected therewith through the angular opening of said socket, means for securing one of the crank-arms to the shutter, and means for operating the crank, connected with the opposite arm.
7. In a device for operating window-shutters, a crank comprising crank-arms and a connecting crank-pin, a fixed bearing in which the crank-pin is j ournaled, means for connecting one of said arms to the shutter, means for operating the crank connected'to the other arm, a stop provided in connection with the bearing for limiting the opening movement of the shutter, and means for adjusting the said stop.
8. In a device for operating window-shutters, a fixed bearing, a crank comprising crank-arms connected together through said bearing, a stop carried by said bearing, and means for adjusting one of said arms with respect to the other, whereby the position of said stop is shifted.
