Description
No. 887,663. PATENTED MAY 12, 1908. 6. LEE.
CHAIR LEG ATTACHMENT. APPLICATION FILED JULY 20. 1907.
atto'oney CHARLES LEE, OF BUTTE, MONTANA.
, CHAIR-LEG ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1908.
Application filed July 26, 1907. Serial No. 385,701.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, CHARLES LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butte,
in the county of Silverbow and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chair-Leg Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to chair leg attachments-and it consists in the construction v in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, comprises an attaching and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a chair equip d with my invention. Fig.2 is a vertical,v ongitudinal, front to rear section through one of' the leg tips or attachments. Fig. 3 is a section of the same taken at right angles to the section shown in Fig. 2. Fig.4 is a side view and partial section of a modified form of the device. Fig. is a vertical transverse section thereof.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a chair of ordinary construction,
upon the rear legs 2 of which are arranged the tips or tilting attachments constituting my invention, said attachments being adapted to permit the chair to be tilted backwardly and to hold the same from slipping on the surface of the floor when in such position.
The leg tip or attachment in the disclosure member 3 in the form of a socket adapted to receive the lower end of the leg 2,said socket being provided withtransverse apertures 4 for the passage of pins or screws or other fastening means for fixing the same to the legs.- From the closed lower end of the socket depends an apertured lug or car 5 which is pivotally connected to the head -6, the same constituting a base or foot piece preferably composed of a metallic disk of the proper shape ,and size to suit the purpose. This head or foot piece is provided with a pair of upwardly extending apertured ears or ugs 7 between which is formed a recess 7 for the reception of the lower end of the lug or ear 5, the bottom of said recess being curved and being of the same radius as the semicircular lower end of the lug or ear, so that such lug or ear is seated in such recess forangular movement with reference to the foot piece and to bear in such recess to maintain the weight of the chair and its occupant and relieve the pivot bolt or rivet 8 of such weight and the stress incident thereto. The
It is understood that one of the attachments is provided upon the lower end of each of the legs 2 of the chair and that the pivotal connection between thetread and base adapts the chair to be tilted back at the convenience of the occupant while the tread of the base will rest squarely upon the surface of the floor and prevent the chair from tion, by which, when the chair is again set down, the treads will come directly in contact with the surface of the floor.
In Figs. 4 and 5, I have shown a modified.
construction wherein the attaching member 3 1s composed of-two side plates or pieces 11 adaptedto be arranged on opposite sides of the chair leg and secured thereto by screws or other fastenings 12. The lower ends of these strips are offset inwardly to provide a pair of spaced parallel perforated ears 13 adapted to project under the chair leg and to pivotally enga e pivot studs or y from a lug 15 extending upwardly from the head or foot piece 6. The lower ends of said ears 13 are substantially semicircular in form, and are seated in similarly shaped recesses 16, in the the socket being of suflicient elasslipping while in tilted position and also pre- .upper side of the. foot or base piece. at op- 5 I r what I claim as new and desire to secure by posite sides of the lug 15, and shoulders 17 are formed at the front and rear sides of such recesses. Each of the side plates or pieces 11, is provided at one side with a shoulder 18, to bear on one of said shoulders 17 and prevent buckling or bending of the foot or base piece under the stress to which the same is subjected, said shoulders also serving to prevent the base piece from assuming a perpendicular positionwhen the chair is lifted or raised up.
It will be seen that the device applied as shown in Fig. 1 willpermit the chair to be tilted backwardly to allow the occupant to sit in an inclined position without shifting the position of the base and tread of each tip, which remains squarely in contact with the floor, thus preventing any liability of the chair slipping along the surface of the floor and overturning in a backward direction, and that the construction is such as to enable sold at a comparatively low cost.
Having thus described the invention,
Letters Patent is: a J
A chair leg attachment comprising a socket member to receive the lower e d f chair leg, a base member forming a f t piece, one of said members being provided with a pair of spaced lugs and other member a single lug fitting between said spaced l means for pivotally connecting the lugs, on the base member and socket member, the pivotal connection being on a line in advance of the center of the base member, cooper-at ing shoulders on the socket member and base member to limit the pivotal movement thereof in one direction, and an elastic tr ad upon the base member, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
CHARLES LEE. Witnesses:
EDWARD BISBEE, JOHN CAMPBELL.
