To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. GRUBER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I/Vrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invent1on relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches, and the invention has for its primary object to provide a sim le and inexpensive wrench, which can be eas' y and quickly adjusted.
Another object of this invention is to dispense with the use of screw threads for adjusting the movable jaw of a wrench.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be presently described in detail and then specifically claimed.
Referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench, Fig. 2 is an edge view of the wrench, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the movable jaw of the wrench.
To put my invention into practice, I construct my improved wrench of a shank 1 having a fixed jaw 2, the rearwardly extending portion 3 of which can be used similar to an ordinary hammer. The front longitudinal edge of the shank is provided with a groove 4 extending into the jaw 2, to form a pocket 5. In the groove 4 is mounted a toothed bar 6 having contracted ends 7 and 8, the end 7 loosely fitting within the ocket 5, while the end 8 of the bar rests in the lower end of the groove 4. Mounted in said groove is a spring 9, which bears against the rear face of the bar 6 and forces the same outwardly.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is a movable jaw 10 having an interior toothed surface 11 adapted to engage the toothed bar 6. The forwardly extending portion 12 of the jaw 10 is cut away, as at 14, to permit of said jaw being closed or moved into engagement with the jaw' 2.
By cutting away the jaw 12 on its grippingface, I reduce without in any wise sacrificing strength in the wrench, the toothed-engagement between the slidable-j aw and the rack 6, while at the same time, maintaining a long bearing for the connecting-strap or back of this slidable-j aw with the back of the wrenchshank 1. Since, in thus constructing the slidable-jaw, the connecting-strap or back of the slidable-jaw projects, and lies in a plane beyond the gripping-face of the jaw, the hammer-head 8' of the fixed-jaw 2 is likewise cut away to the same extent as the jaw 12 is cut away in order to receive the extending end of the connecting-strap or back of the slidable-j aw, and permit the grippingfaces of jaws 2 and 12 to come into engagement, or approximately so. The decreased toothed-engagement between the slidablejaw and the rack 6, with the maintained long bearing for said jaw on the shank 1 is an important feature of my invention. The longbearing on the back of the wrench-shank obviates undue play between the jaw and the shank, while the comparatively short toothedengagement between the jaw and the shank permits of the bar 6 being readily depressed within the groove 4 against the tension of the spring 9 so as to disengage the bar from all of the teeth of the slidable-j aw, that the latter may be freely and easily moved or adjusted on the shank.
The shank 1 upon its lower end is provided with a handle 15, which serves to retain the contracted end 8 of the bar 6 within the groove 4. The handle is suitably secured to the shank 1, preferably by screws 16, 16.
To adjust the movable jaw 10, the toothed bar 6 is pressed into the groove 4, disengaging the teeth of said bar from the toothed surface 11 of the jaw, at which time, the jaw 10 can be moved to any desired position between the handle 15 and the jaw 2.
The wrench is constructed of strong and durable metal whereby it will withstand the rough useto which wrenches are generally subjected.
What I claim and Letters Patent, is
In a wrench, a shank having one face provided with a groove extending from its upper end and terminating at a point removed from its lower end, a handle detachably connected to the lower end of the shank desire to secure I by and of a length as to extend over the lower part of said groove thereby forming in connection with said groove a pocket, a jaw formed integral with the upper end of the shank and having that portion of its lower face which constitutes a gripping surface extending below the plane of the remaining portion of its lower face, that portion of said jaw which projects belowthe remaining portion arranged forwardly of the upper end of the groove and forming in connection with the groove a pocket, saidlast mentioned pocket of less length than the firstmentioned pocket a movable jaw mounted on the shank and having that portion of its upper face which constitutes a gripping surface arranged in a lane below the remaining portion of said face thereby forming a shoulder adapted to enter in the pocket at the upper end of the shank whereby the gripping surface of the jaws can be positioned in close proximity to each other, a toothed bar mounted in said groove and having its upper end smooth and projecting in the upper pocket, the lower end of said bar being reduced and smooth to extend in the lower of said pockets, said smooth lower end of greater length than the smooth upper end, said movable jaw having an opening whereby said jaw is mounted upon the shank, one wall of said opening being toothed and a bow-shaped spring interposed between said bar and the inner wall of the groove, said spring having its ends bearing against said bar and its intermediate por tion engaging said shank thereby maintaining said bar in engagement with the teeth of the movable jaw.
