Description
filler or piece 6 and when so bent inclose or Unrrnn srn'rns OSWALD PULLIAM, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO PITTSBURGH EQUIP- MENT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYL- VANIA.
CAR-BOLSTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April as, 1908.
Application filed September 16, 1907. Serial No. 398,109.
Be it known that I, OSWALD S. PULLIAM,
- of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and trates applications of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevational view partly in section of a truck-bolster embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 a part plan and a part sectional view,
the section being taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 detail sectional views showing modified torms of my invention.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the top-member of abolster. This top-member, as illustrated and as preferred, is made of channel form and is provided with a centerbearing plate or member 2.
3 designates a bottom-member of the bolster; this member is joined at its center to the center of the top-member by a king-post 4. Member 3 at each of its ends is formed with a bent end-portion5. These end-portions 5 are formed by bending the respective ends of member 3 back upon said member. In practice the said ends are bent back over a o erlap said filler as clearly shown by the drawings.
The respective ends of the top and bottommernbers 1 and 2 meet in end-member's 7. Said end-members 7 are each provided with a groove or recess 8 adapted to receive the respective bent end-portions 5 of the bottommember 3, together with each of the fillers 6.
In the form of Fig. 4, I have shown the filler or piece 6 formed integral with the endmember 7, while'in the otherforms illus.
trated, the filler 6 is a separate piece which may be joined to the respective ends or" the bottom-member 8, before said ends are bent over, by means of bolts or rivets 9, as shown by Fig. 3.
By providing the piecesor fillers 6 the ends of the bottom-member may be bent over said fillers without fear of straining or weakening said bent-over ends of the bottom-member.
In this construction, the fillers receive the tension strains thereby preventing the bentover portions of the bottom-member from pulling open, as has heretofore been the case.
Clips or engaging-members 10 are provided for the purpose of securing the ends of the top-member to the end-members; these clips a"e secured to the end-members bynieans of rivets 11.
What I claim is:
1. A bolster comprising a top-member, a
bottom-member having an end-portion bent upon itself, a filler located in the bent-portion, an end-member formed to receive the end bent-portion, and a'clip secured to the end-member and engaging an end of the topmember.
7 2. A bolster comprising a top-member, a bottom-member having an endortion bent upon itself, a filler located in t e bent-portion, and an end-member provided with a groove adapted to receive the end bent-portion and filler.
3. A bolster comprising a top-member, a
bottom-member having an endportion bent upon itself, a filler located in the bent-portion, an end-member provided with a groove to receive the bent-portion and filler, and a clip secured to the endmember' and engaging an end of the top-member. i
1 In testimony whereof I afiix my signature .in presence of two witnesses.
