Description

WILLIAM H. SELLERS, OF KEOKUK, IOWA.
` Letters Patent No. 88,588, (lated April 6, 1869.
IMPROVED PEG-@RITTER IOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making parl: of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that IVIL'LIAM H. SELLERS, of the city of Keokuk, Iowa, have invented a new and usei'nl Improved Peg-Gutter for Boots and Shoes; and I do hcrebydeclare the4 following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a vertical section, asthrough the centre of my improved peg-cutter, ready for use.
This invent-ion consists ot' an improved peg-cutter, which is made as shown, and set forth herein, designed to be run by the application of foot or other power, and operate, by the use of a rotary and areeiproeating cutter, to remove the ends of the pegs from boots and shoes.
A is an upright part, to be aliixed, at B, to suitable supports. 1
Near the lower end of A are held suitable journalbearings of Va horizontal shaft, C, for driving.
This shaft bears a suitable ily-wheel, D, and a bevel- Wheel, E, whieh drives another bevel-wheel, F, on an upright sha-ft, G, which has a step-beariug, A', held by part A.
The shaft G, at its upper end, bears a fiat or oval circular disk, forming a rotary cut-ter, H, iinlned to cut or remove the end of pegs from the lheels and instep of boots and shoes, by the rotation of the shafts (5r and G.
The' shaft Ghas a journal-bearing from part A, at I.
At K, on shaft G, is a crank, on which is pivoted the end of the connecting-bar L, so as to receive a reciprocatingr motion to its enter end, M, which plays in a bearing in afbranch, N, of part A.
This branch N, at its outer end, is slotted, at O above and below part C, with slots less than the breadth ol' the part M.
Down through M is a hole for a part, P, extending, above and below, into the slots, to prevent any turning, and playing freely in the slots.
On the top side, P hasan extension, P, alongthe slot, to prevent P from turning, as a guide On top of part l is fixed a cutter, Rformed, to act by reciprocating, to cut from the instep to the toe, the boot or shoe being moved by the hand of the ope ator, to reach all the parts. v
Different-sized and shaped cut-ters can be used.
Theeutter R may be made to operate in different ways, as, for instance, the cutter may be rotary, and be operated, by a chain, from the driving-shaft G, instead of by reciprocatingbar L.
l. Crank K, bar L, and cutter R, combined as and for the purpose speciiied.
2. The reciprocating cutter It and the rotating cutter H, combined as and fer the purpose specified.
3. The combination of' a rotary cutter, H, and`an additional cutter, to operate in the toe of the boot or shoe, and driven from the saine driving-shaft, substan` tiall y as set forth.
, WM. H. SELLERS. Titnesses SAMUEL JACOB WALLACE, E. WALsMITH.
