` Be it known that I, S. D. TRIP?, of Lynn, in lthe countyvof Essex, and State Aof Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Tool-Reversing Cutting-Ma'cl-iine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,.and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved machine for`cutting out, from fabrics or stock, various' artis cles which have curved sides, such, for instance, as the soles of boots and shoes; and it consists in having the stock, to which the cutters are attached, arranged'in such amanner that in the operation of the machine the cutters may be reversed, so 4that reversed curves may be cut consecutively, and also the position of a ,cutter changed or reversed. at each cut, so as to admit of economy in stock, the heel of one sole being at the side of "the front portion of the adjoining one, as hereinaftersfully shown and described.

4A. represents an upright framing, composed of two side pieces, a a, connected by suitable cross-rodsr In the upper parts of the'side pieces a a there are made vertical oblong slots, c c, in which the journals dd of a shaft, B, are fitted, and allowed to work freely up and down, each journal being connected by a rod, C, to a crank, D, on a shaft, E, in the lower part of the framing, as shown clearly in iig. 1.
The shaft B has two cutters F F attached to it at opposite sides. These cutters lare of the same vshape or form, but have a reverse position relatively with euch other. g
In the present instance, these cutters are represented of a shape designed for cutting soles for boots and shoes, as will be seen by referring to iig. 3.

V-form, (see fig. 2,) catch bar g h having s. notch, j, made in its inner side or edge to receive the lower end of a. guide, L, which is pvoterl at the centre of bar z', and in the operation of the machine catches alternately into the notchesj of the bars g It, said guide having a spring, k, bearing against it, which spring has a tendency to keep the guide Yin the notch of bar g. -The three barsg hz' have such a position `relatively with each other as 'to have a. Y-shaped groove, (ZX, between them, (ses figs. 2 vand 4.) l I l M represents a bar, pi-voted at its lower end to the inner side of the plate H, and having a spring, l, bearing against it, 'to keep the upper end in contact with the upper end of bar g.
, The pins e e, of the cros`s-hcad G, work in the grooveax, between the bars g h z', and at the outer sides of the bars g h, and these bars, in connection with the pivoted guide L and the pivoted bar M, give to the cuttershaft B, as it is moved up and downby the rotation of the crankshaft E, a. 'rotating motion, a half yrevolution sino? 2 of shaft B being` made during each stroke, that is to say, from the time it commences to rise until it nearly reaches the tcrmination'of its downward stroke. This is effected by the uppermost pin e being delected or turned, as shaft E moves upward, by the'guide L, which rests in the notch of bar g, over the top of and to the outer side of har 71., while the other pin e moves up at the outer side of bar g, between it and the pvoted bar M,
forcing outward the latter, and passing into groove u ahoveg and M, the latter, under the influence of spring l, instantly closing against the top of g,'so that :it the commencement of the downward movement of shaft E, which occurs when the pins reach thispositon, the pin 4which has just passed above g and lil will be'compelled to pass down the straight part of the groove ax, forcing the guide L out of its Way, the latter, after the pin has passed it, instantly resuming its position in'harg, under the-inuence of' its spring,
By this arrangement, it will be seen that the cutters F F, on shaft B, are brought alternately in cutting position, the leather being,r placed on a bed, N, in the framing, (see hg. 3,) and one cutter cutting at one time the right side of a sole and the left side of the adjoining one, the other cutter, when it descends, cutting the right side of the lastnamed sole. This will be fully understood` hy referring to iig. 3, in which the cuts are shown 'in tred.
' The same intermittent rotating motion may be given the Shaft B, without the reciprocating one, by operating the plate H, which may be done from shaft K. Other means, however, maybe employed to operate it.
In this'use of the machine, a cutter, O, is attached to the outer journal nl of shaft B, said cutter having the form oi' a. complete sole, so that stock will he saved by cutting it with the cutter 'reversed atreach cut, the
heel end of one out being by the side of the front part of the succeeding one, and cioe ce1-sa. Buy this means economy insteek is effected. i
I would remark that when the upand-down motion is given the shaft E, the plate H is held stationary, by securing the crank J in an upward position by means of a pin, bx, (see g. Tl.)
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The means employed for' operating the cutter-shaft B, to wit, the 4bars y it 2', pivotecl guide L, and the pivoted bar M on plate H, in connection with the cross-head G on the journal of shaft Eyprovided with the pins e e, all arranged to operate substantially in the manner as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Attaching of the plate H to the framing A, in such manner as to admit ot the same having u reciproeating movement imparted to it, substantially as shown and described. f f f S. D. TRIPP.,
