Wi ha moes AVERY ELMORE PHILLIS,
OF WRIGHTSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WRIGHTSVILLE HARDWARE COMPANY, OF WRIGHTSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN sYLvANIA.
To -aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AVERY E. PHILLIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wrightsville, in the county of York, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle-Fastenin s, of which the following is a description, re erence being had to the accompanying drawing andto the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improved means for attaching handles to hammers, axes, and the like, and consists in the matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hammer head, constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same.; and Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 are respectively plan views, showing .different forms of carrying out In invention.
In tiiese drawings, A re nesents a hammer head havingthe usual eye in which the end of the handle is inserted. The eye of the hammer is divided at its upper end by a wed e-shaped piece a, formed integral with the ammer head, and lengthwise thereof. The end of the handle is driven onto said wedge-shaped piece, which thus spreads the upper end of the handle wedging 1t into the dispensing with the usual indeendent means for holding the handle in the iammer head.'
In Fig. 3, two cross wise wedge-shaped pieces a are shown; in Fig. 4 one, which is set at an inclination; in Fig. 5 two set at an in- Specication of Letters Patent. Application filed May 21, 1907. Serial No. 374,897.

clination; and in Fig. 6, one, set at a very decided inclination.
-While I have shown and described a hammer head, it will be understood that the invention is applicable to hatchets, axes, and
other tools.
It will be nqted that the wedge shaped piece a is formed integral 'with the hammer iead and the outer face of said piece is substantially flush with the outer surface of the hammer head. By this feature of construction, the outer face of the wedge may be polished simultaneously with the polishing of the outer surface of the hammer head. It will also be noted that by my construction, wherein the hammer head is provided with an eye extending entirely therethrough, the hammer handle may be driven in untiiaiirmly fixed in the hammer head and the portions of the handle, if any extending beyond the outer surface of the hammer head, m'ay be cut ofi, thus making a very neat and attractive hammer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
A hammer head or the like, having an eye extending entirely therethrough, a wedge located in said eye and formed integral with said head, said wedge having its outer end iiush with the outer surface of the hammer head, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
AVERY ELMORE PHILLIS.
