Description

PATENTED APR. 21, 1908 P. B. MARVIN.
REFRAGTORY BLOCK POR BUILDING PURPOSES.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 30, 1905.
ATTORNEY.
` for Buildin UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I f FREDERICK B.' MARVIN, oF PATERsoN, NEW JERSEY. I
REFRAGTQRY is'LocK Fon BUILDING PURPOSES.
Specification of Lette's Patent.
Patented April 21,. 190s.
Application led January 30, 1905. Serial No. 243,259.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FREDERIOK B. MAnvIN, a citizen of' theUnited States, residing in Paterson, county of Passaic, and- State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refractory Blocks Purposes; and I do hereby declare the fo lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- `pertains to make and use the same, reference eing had to the accompanying drawings,
, and to letters of reference" marked thereon,
l' of their Aingredients of these substances,
' which form a part of this specification.
vLM invention relates to concrete and other arti 'cial stone's'ubstances, and it Vhas for its object to provide, in place ol the cinders or broken stone usually constituting one of the especially as they are used in the construction 'of buildings, pieces of 'refractory material made in conventional forms and cellular.
. What might betermed the solid ingredients 'of such substances as heretofore compounded, such as broken stone or cinders, being irregular in form and size, tended toagglomerate itself in masses of the smaller particles, only the larger pieces standing properly dis ersed through the substance. his affecte materially the homogeneity of the t substancel and led to unevenness of strength and a lack of the desired elasticity,vv porosity, etc., in the mass.- By providing conventionally shaped and sized solid bodies for this pur ose, I overcome all these disadvantages, an besides have a material which is more readily handled and more at the command of the workmen in the matter perceiving just what quantity and vdisposition of solids is needed and attained. Andby forming these blocks cellular, the
' lightness of the mass when. the blocks are ,l vincorporated in the artificial stone substance in the accom anymg drawings,
is mcreased' without detracting from its y compass, these blocks are preferably molded vin groups held together by an integral con- "nectng ortion Weak enough so thatit can be readily actured with proper tools'for that pu ose. V y Ainvention will be foundully illustrated wherein,
,Figure 1 s ows a group lof the blocks in plan, such group being in this instance a slab; and Fig. 2 is a view partly in end elevation and partlyin section of What'is shown in Fig 1 Various materials ca able of being molded and of imparting a reactory character to the resultant composition may be em loyed in the manufacture of the blocks. or instance, theform of blocks shown in the drawings maybe made up of cement, sand and cinders.
The blocks may be formed as follows: The materials described above, being properly mixed together, are molded in two sets, a, b, of half-blocks, each such half-block in the set beingl formed with a semi-s 'herical recess d or ot erwise .hollowedL All t e halfblocks in each set are interconnected at their tops b webs e molded integrally with them and alllying in the same plane, so that, except for the recesses d, a plain at surface j' throu hout is presented. Two such sets of half-blocks are then placed face to face and cemented., their recesses d registering. The cementing may be derived from a special substance used or sim of the two faces f whi e the substance forming the blocks is still in an undr state. The result of this process is a slab divided ofi on both sides by registering intersecting ooves g into a group of blocks 7c having cel s Z and capable of being readily broken up into uniformly shaped fragments upon racturing the slab along the webs m produced by the grooves. j
Having thus full described my invention, what I claim and esire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
Asan article of manufacture for incorporation inlconcrete and other plastic artificial stone substances, a body formed of refractory material and. ,comprising two layers cemented together, each layer having semispherical recesses on its inside face registering with corresponding semi-spherical recesses of the other layer, and sai body being weakened on its outside surfaces along intersectingsets of lines disposed relatively between said recesses, scribed.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of January, 1'905.
