MANUFACTURE OF CIGARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, JosEPH B. DE Lem, a
citizen of the United States, and residing at in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cigars and the manufacture thereof, and the object of the invention is to provide for the annulment or neutralization of the poisonous efiects of the nicotin in the tobacco of the cigars and also to destroyworms, insects or microbes in the tobacco of the cigars; a further object being to provide for the flavoring of the cigars; and with these and other objects in view'the invention consists in the method of making cigars hereinafter described and in the cigars so made.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol-- lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a cigar made according to my invention; and, Fig. 2 a transverse section thereof.
In the accompanying drawing a represents the body of a cigar and in carrying my invention into eflect, I provide a loosely wound or woven cord or strip 7) of fibrous material, the fiber known as ramie being preferred. This cord or strip is dipped in eroxid of hydrogen or a similar liquid or so ution possessing equivalent chemical properties and adapted to operate as a disinfectant, as a germicide and also as a neutralizer of nicotin. As soon as the said cord or strip of fiber has absorbed the said liquid it is placed in the center of'a bunch of tobacco leaves or scraps to be rolled into a cigar, and the cigar is quickly finished in the usual manner by placing a wrapper thereon and gluing or securing the tip thereof. When the cigar has been finished in this manner, the gas or vapor from the peroxid of hydrogen or other equivalent liquid or solution contained in the fibrous cord or strip will gradually permeate the entire body of the 0' ar, the nicotin contained in the tobacco wil be neutralized thereby, and all forms of insect or germ life in the tobacco of the cigar will be destroyed.
In smoking a cigar made in this manner, the fumes from the peroXid of hydrogen or other material will enter the mouth and throat and serve to destroy any insect, or microbe, or germ life therein, and the said mouth and throat will also be protected and benefited by smoking "a cigar made in this manner.
By saturating the fibrous material with any desired odoriferous or flavoring substance or oil, the cigar may also be flavored as will be readily understood, and if preferred, or necessary, a supplemental fibrous strip may be em loyed for this purpose, said supplemental fibrous strip being placed in the tobacco of the cigar and rolled therein as hereinbefore described:
The fibrous cord or strip b, and the supplemental fibrous strip, if employed, do not extend entirely through the cigar, said cord, or cord and strip, being shorter than said cigar at both ends, and a cigar made in this manner is to all appearance the same as any other cigar.
The peroxid of hydrogen or other equiv alent substance, after the cigar is made, is
first absorbed by the cigar in the manner hereinbefore described and remains therein after having neutralized the nicotin, as an active principle in the cigar and as the smoke is drawn into the mouth and throat the oxygen is also drawn into the mouth and throat in sufficient quantities to destroy germ life or incipient diseases of the mucous membrane of the mouth and throat, and the smoking of a cigar made in this manner becomes a benefit rather than an injury.
It will be understood that the cord or strip, or cords or strips, of fibrous material employed are very small and occupy but little space, and when treated in the manner described their presence in the cigar cannot be detected in the smoking thereof.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my invention serves four important purposes, namely, the neutralization of the effect of the nicotin, the flavoring of the cigar, the de struction of insect or germ life in the cigar and the cleansing of the mucous membrane in the mouth and throat in the operation of smoking the cigar. The destruction of insect or germ life in the cigar in itself is a great advantage, as it is a Well known fact that a great many cigars are lost every year by the operation of Worms or other insects therein by which the Wrappers are destroyed or rendered useless.
Although, I have described the use of peroXid of hydrogen specifically for the purpose herein specified it will be apparent that my invention is not limited thereto and any suitable liquid germicide and disinfectant having properties similar to those of peroxid of hydrogen may be employed.
Having fully described my invention What claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein described improvement in the manufacture of cigars Which consists in placingin the tobacco of the cigar before the cigar is rolled a fibrous cord or strip saturated with a liquid germicide and disinfectant, and then rolling the cigar and applying the Wrapper thereto.
2. The herein described improvement in the manufacture of cigars which consists in placing in the tobacco of the cigar before the cigar is rolled a fibrous cord or strip saturated With a liquid germieide and disinfectant, and a liquid. flavoring substance, and then rolling the cigar and applying the Wrapper thereto.
5. A cigar containing a cord or strip of hbrous substance saturated with a llquid germieide and disinfectant.
4. A cigar containing a cord or strip of fibrous substance saturated with a liquid germicide and disii'ifectan t and with a flavoring substance.
