TABLE FOR CHEESE-CUTTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 16, 1907.
Patented April 14, 1908.
Serial No. 384,085.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS V. GARLooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Custer city, in the county of Custer and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tables for Cheese-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tables for cheese cutters, particularly to tables of that class having retaining knives or blades to enter the cheese to secure it in position.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a construction whereby the table carrying the cheese may be lifted out of engagement with the blades so thatthe body of cheese may be shifted on the table to center it for accurate cuts, or removed from the table to allow the latter to be cleaned.
A further object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for raising and lowering the table and holding the same in an elevated position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a top plan view of a table for cheese cutters embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section thereof on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the cam. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modification in the means for raising and lowering the table. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a portion of the base, showing the guide slot for the outer end of the lever shown in Fig. 4 and themeans for locking the lever to hold the table elevated.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents a base, comprising, as shown, a horizontal plate provided with a depending supporting flange 2, in lieu of which supporting legs of any preferred construction may be used.
Arranged above the base is a table or platform 3, which may be made of wood, metal or any other suitable material. This table or platform is provided with radially disposed slots 4 for the passage of similarly arranged cheese-holding knives or blades 5 carried by a rotating holder 6 disposed below the table and between the same and platform 1. The holder 6 preferably comprises a plate of skeleton form having a hub 7, a rim 8 and a series of radially arranged connecting arms 9, the rim being arranged to contact with the base and platform. The blades 5 are fixed in any suitable manner to' certain of the radial arms 9 and project upwardly through the slots 4 in the table and preferably have their upper ends tapering to points to readily enter the base of the cheese. The body of cheese rests upon the platform 3 and is held from movement thereon by the knives, as will be readily understood.
Secured to the center of the underside of the table 3 is a plate 10 from which depends a circular stud or post 11 passing through openings 12 and 13 in the base and holder, and extending a suflicient distance below the base to guide and center the table in its movements, and to support the same in an elevated position above the knives 5. When the table is in lowered position, both it and the holder 6, which are connected for simultaneous movement by the knives 5, rotate on the post 11, thus enabling the body of cheese to be turned to any position for the purpose v of cutting off a portion or segment thereof.
In order to enable the table to be elevated independently of the holder so that the cheese can be released from the knives to permit it to be adjusted on the table or removed therefrom, suitable means are provided for use in connection with the post 11 to raise and lower the table and hold the same in an ele vated position.
In the form of raising and lowering means shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the base 1 is provided with a pair of depending parallel ears 14 arranged on opposite sides of the post and form ing bearings for the inner end of a shaft 15, said shaft being journaled at its outer end in the flange 2 of the base and provided with a hand wheel 16 by which it may be conveniently turned. Keyed or otherwise fixed to the shaft between the flanges 14 is a cam 17 bearing peripherally against the underside of the post 11, whereby upon turning the shaft in one direction or the other, the table may be raised or lowered. The extent of upward movement of the table is sufiioient to raise its upper surface above the knives 5, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, whereby the cheese may be freed from connection with the knives and turned to center it for the purpose of cutting an accurate slice, or removed in order that the upper surface of the table may be cleaned. 'The table itself may be the table in any obvious manner.

conveniently removed when desired for a thorough cleaning in an obvious manner. The highest point of the periphery of the cam is formed with a flattened surface 18 which is adapted to bear squarely against the lower end of the post 11, whereby the shaft may beheld from turning and the table held or locked in an elevated position for any desired length of time. The spider 6 is provided with a circumferential flange 6 engaged by overhanging guide and retaining clips 6 upon the base. These clips allow the s ider to freely turn but by bearing on the ange prevent the spider from being elevated with the table in the event that the knives tend to hang in the cheese when the table is elevated.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a different means for raising and lowering the table, which may be employed independently of the cam mechanism shown in Figs. 1 and 2 or in conjunction therewith, as desired. The raising and lowering means disclosed in Figs. 4 and 5 embodies a lever 19 centrally fulcrumed on a pin 20 carried by ears 21 de- The inner end of this lever is arranged to bear upon the lower end of the post 11, while the outer end thereofextends to the exterior through a slot 22 formed in the flange 2, thus enabling the lever to swing vertically to raise and lower Beyond the flange the power end of the lever is formed with a finger piece 23 to permit of its convenient adjustment, and, as shown, the slot 22 is formed at its base with a lateral offset 24 provided with a locking shoulder 25. When the finger piece of the lever 23 is depressed the lever will be swung on its fulcrum to raise its inner arm, thus communicating upward motion to the table, and when thus adjusted it will be understood that by shifting the power end of the lever laterally, the portion thereof passing through the slot may be moved into the offset 24 underneath the shoulder 25 which latter will hold the power end of the lever against upward or return movement and thus maintain the table in an The lever may be released in an obvious manner when it is desired to. lower the table.
It will thus be seen that the invention provides a simple construction of table of the character described, by which the platform may be raised out of contact with the holding knives to permit the table to be turned independently of the knives for the adjustment of the cheese to a centered position to secure an accurate cut, or for the release and ready removal of the cheese in order that the table may be conveniently cleaned.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
