Lezers Patent No. 88,452, daad March 3o, 1869.
TMPRCVEMENT IN LATHE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be. it known that we, TERRENCE COLLINS and AsHER Gas'rrnn, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in .Machines for'Turning Irregular Forms, and Cutting Roped Monldin gs; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference `marked thereon.
The object of this invention is to turn irregular forms, and especially such as have a part circular and partrectangular section, and to cut thereon a moulding, Vor bead on such portion of said section as may be desired; and the application thereofis especially7 to form roped moulding-strips, with a rectangular corner, to iit (without the interposition ofany additional pieces) the corners of window or door-frames, and similar places.
This invention consists in the use ofa series of cutterssupported upon a table, so arranged, that when desired, they may be raised entirely o from the material being operatedupon, or lowered to out to any desired depth.
And it consists, furthermore, in the arrangement and combination of certain devices, by which such object is attained, and which are hereinafter fullyv described.
To enable others to make and use our improvement, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 is a front elevation.
Figure 2 is atop plan.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional elevation.
Figures 4 and 5, an elevation and plan, respectively, of the moulding-cutters.
The operating-devices of our machine aresupported upon a frame, A, made of the usual materials, and of the general form indicated in the drawings.V v
At the rear end of said frame, supported in proper j ournal-beaiings, is the driving-shaft B, having pulley b, and which transmits power and motion to countershaft c, having pulley c', by belt b.
On shaft C are arranged pulleys D G, having belts dv g, which transmit motion to the arbor E, carrying `the cutter F, for cutting'the circular part of the material being operated upon, andalso the arbor H, carrying the cutter I, for cutting roped mouldings, there being additional pulleys and belts for communicating motion to arbors H1 IP, having additional cutters, Il I2, arranged similarly. o
Arbor E, having cutter F, is placed horizontally in bearings e', upon the table K; said cutter F being of any of the ordinary forms for cutting stuff to a circular section, employed in wood-working machinery.
The arbors H Hl H", having cutters I 1 I2, are supportedvertically by bearings hrupon 4the table K, aforesaid.`
The material to be operated upon is held in supports L, directly under the cutters aforesaid, said supports being ser ured to the frame A, and arranged with bushing, or holders L1, having central openings l, which correspond to the sectional outline of the material. Thus in the cornered roped mouldings, especially intended to be formed in one application of the machine, said holders will have an opening, l, to correspond to the area of the stuff, as shown at x, in fig; 3, being circular, ex-
ccpting in one quadrant, where the square corner remams.
The holders Ll have spur-gearing L2 in their outer surfaces, which connect with gear-wheels M, of shaft m, said gearing being again in connection with the gearwheel N, of the shaft n.
Shaft a has, at its outer end, a bevel-wheel n', con-l necting with the bevel-gear wheel O, upon the shaft O.
Shaft O has pulley O2, which is connected by a belt with power-shaft B, and thus all parts are put in motion.
Thus, by the transmission of power and motion aforesaid, and by the especial construction of holders L the stuiI is revolved under the cutters F, and I Il I2, and out into the desired forms.
Isn order to feed the material being operated upon, forward to the operation of the cutters, a standard, P, resting upon rack P', is arranged. Said rack is operated upon by the spin-wheel o upon shaft O, above referred to. The material being held in the standard P, and passing through the holders L1, aforesaid, will, by the operation of said rack P, be fed forward, as required.
In order that'the action of the several cutters may gage the cam r, which said cam c' must exactly correspond in form to the sectional figure, or outline of the article to be produced, as shown at x, iig. 3. z
The moulding-cutters I Il I2, are of a pear-shape, withcutting-edges i, as shown in figs. 4 and 5, said form being adapted to cut the usualroped mouldings. By reversing the cutting-edges of the cutters I Il I2, and
circular cutter F, and also the rotary motion of the ar-v bors E, and H H* H2, a left moulding will be produced.
Thus, by the employment of a second set of cutters alone, without the use of additional appliances, both right and left mouldings are produced.
We do not claim, as new, any of the devices singly, for they are old and in use; but, s
What we do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The cutters F I Il I2, supports L, holders L1, standard P, rack P', and operated as described, in combination with the table K, cam fr, and its connect-ions with table K, and the devices for operating the same, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
