Thegage plates used will vary as to the arrangement of their nail holes according to the outline of nailing required. The gage late for short nails may he in the bottoni o the recess of the receiver, as in Fig. 6, or for long nails it may occupy a position nearthe top of said recess, see Fig. 7, the gage plate at such time being supported on aring, ast7 which maybe of wire sprunor into the recess in the receiver. In order that the holes in the receiver ma be exactly alined with the holes in the nai e block, I have provided the transferrer arm al" with an adjustable stop c whichV is arranged to contact with a nut l0fscrewed upon a threaded projection 12 of the nail-block holder. In machines as heretofore constructed diilicultywas sometimes Inet with in guiding and dellvering nails correctly into the holes b1? of the nail-block; said difficulty arising from the fact that the underside of the nailreceiver, when the transferrer was in position to deliver nails, stood in a plane above that in which the top if the heel and top-lift carrying plate moved, and consequently there was considerable space between the upper side of the nail-block om and the underside of the receiver. When this space is greater than the length of the nail, the nails cannot be delivered with certainty into the holes in the nail-blocli 'and consequently I have providedy a nail-guide d10, having a series of holes 5 which are in alinement with the holes in thenaibreceiver, and this nailguide is sustainedA for the beet results from the underside of thereceiver by means of stands 7, re resented in full lines in Fig. 1 and also in ig. 7. The nail-guide is located sufliciently below the lower end of the nailreceiver and the lower side ofthe arm al to afford space for the nail-sustainer.
Figs. 6 and S show the nail-sustainer in position to.sustain the nails, it occupying the position shown until the arm all arrives in the position, Fig. 9, at which time the sus# tainer7 as has been described, is withdrawn from under the heads Aof the nails7 letting the nails, see Fig. 7 drop throuGh theholes in the nail-guide and enter the h. es bw in the nailblock. The nails dropped into the holes are arrestedin usual manner by the up er ends of the drivers d contained in the nai -receiving holes in the nail-block, as provided for in said patent.
I believe .I am the first to provide a nailguide, occupying a.' position between the nail-transferrer and the top of the nailblock, and Iv desire to claim this feature broadlyJ irrespective of its construction, and in whatever form it may be employed. rIfhe lower side of the nail-guide is located in a horizontal plane as close as practicable'tothe upper side of the nail-block and all the nails' invthe'receiver and rest'ing uponthe sustainer will drop from-the' receiver and be guided through the holes 5 of the nail-guide on their way into the holes b1 of the nail-block.

This done, the operator through usual means starts the heeln'ailinfr machine, 'and the die-bed spindle, with the nail-block head a and nail-block al, is lifted, as described, causing the heel restin upon the nail-block to meet and be resse( firmly at its upper end against the en of the sole of the boot or shoe to which the heel is t0, be attached, said boot or shoe being held on any usual jack. the machine is automatically stopped in 'usual manner all ready to repeat the eration, as described. Claims.
1. In a machine of the class described, a horizontally movable nail-transferrer and a nail-sustainer, combined with a horizontally movable nail-guide held out olf' contact with said transferrer and having holes to rev ceive and guide the nails after leaving said nail-sustainer.
2,. In a machine of the class described, a transferrer, and a nail-guide, combined with a sustainer movable between said transferrer and guide.
3. In a machine ofthe class described, a nail-block, a transferrer to present nails to the. nail-block, and a nail-guide ixed'in its Y osition with relation to said transferrer and lnterposed between the nail-holes of the transferrer andthe nail holes in said nailblock to guide the nails after leaving the transferrer on their way into the holes of the nail-block.
4. In a machine of the class described, a nail-transferre'r, a nail-sustainer, means 'to hold said sustainer in its operative position while the transferrer' is taking nails into position to be driven, and a nail-guide having a series of holes occu ying a position in line with the nail holes -o said transferrer, ,combined with means to: release said sustainer the transferrer an said nail-Guide.
5. In a eel-nailing machine, the combination with nail-'driving mechanism, of a nailtransferrer provided with means forsustainpass through the ing the nails, a nail-guide, and means to acleave oles in tuate the sustainin means when the carrier is moved into nailelivering position to .per- Init-the nails to pass from the nail-guideto the nail-driving mechanism.

7 .In a heel nailing machine, the combina- I tion wit-h a nail receiver'chambered at one. side, of an unyielding nail gage located in said chamber and means for sustaining saidn i gage fixedly at a distance from the bottom of said chamber.
8. A nail-receiver having a series of' nail holes for a number of differing nailings, and a detachable nail-frage applied to the upper side of said. nail-receiver and having. nail holes for a definite nailing, and means to unyieldingly sustain said naihgage at a distance from the upper side of said receiver.
9. In a heel-nailing machine, the combination of a transferrer, a nail-ga e sustained above the'transferrer, a nail-gui e depending from said transferrer, and a nail-sustainer movable out of and in the space between said nail-guide and transferrer.
10. A nail-receiver provided with holes for the reception of nails, combined with a naily ferrer and said nail-guide, a locking device for said sustainer, means to automatically unlock said sustainer, and move it that the nails may enter and pass through the holes of the nail-guide.
13. In a machine of the class described," a horizontally-movable nail transferrer, and a nail-sustainer located at one side of ysaid transfer-rer, combined with an independent nail guide having holes to receive and guide the nails after leaving the nail holes ofsaid transferrer.
14. In a heel-nailingl machine, a plate having a guideway, a breast-gage having its shank entered loosely in said guideway, 'a back-gage, a spring acting normally to move the breast-gage toward the back-gage, and a stop changeable as to its 'position on said plate lo limit the extent of movement of the )least-gage toward the back-gage.
15, ln a heel-nailing machine, a top-lift and heel-carrying plate having a contact piece, and a yieldingly sustained actuator to move said' late and put the heel holding part thereofp in operative position..
16. In a heel-nailing machine, a nail-block, a top-lift and heel-carrying plate, a holder upon which said plate is mounted, a yieldingr catch engaging said plate, and means to ad- 'ust said catch to rovide for putting the reel in proper position with relation to the :rail-block.
17. In a heel-nailing-1nachine, a top lift l and heel-carrying plate, a catch to engage and' hol said plato While the heel is being attached, a pivotally -sustained yieldingly-a'c-l tuated tri ping device moved by said catch' While the atter is being moved in one direction and the heel is being attached to a slice, said tripping device being arranged to release the catch after said heel has` been attached to a shoe.

In a heel-nailing machine, a' plate having a guideway, a breast gage having its shank held loosely in said guideway, a backgage, means to move said back-gage to adapt the same to the Work to be done, and a spring connected at one end to said breast-gage and at its opposite end adjustably connected to said plate, that 4the pressure of the breastgao'e may be exerted uniformly' on the stock he d between it and the back-gage whatever its size. In a heel-nailing machine, a plate having an attached guideway plate provided with parallel guideways, a back-gage comprising a notched pla-te having a shank extended backwardly therefrom at one side of the apex of the notch of said back-gage, said shank entering one of the grooves of said guideWay-plate, and a breast-gage comprising a shank having a ri ht-angled arm extended therefrom in one direction, the shank of the breast-gage entering the other groove in said guidewayilate, means to adjust the position of the bac -gage, and a spring acting normally to move thel breast-gage toward the back-gage.
