IMPROVEMENT IN LAS'I'S.

The Schedule referred to. in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Tnonms BULLIVANT, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Last for Boots and Shoes;- and I dollereby declare that the following is a full and exactdescriptioirof the same, nference being hadto the awompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

[t is wcllknown that the upper leather of boots and shoes, particularly those of children, wear out usually at the junction of the upper leather with the toe-portion of the sole, which arises froin the more exposed positiolrof the upper leather to wear at the toe, together with the pressure of the foot upon. the upper leather, at th toe of the shoe, caused by the heel of the shoe, which throws the \veightofthc body toward the toe, thereby causing greater pressure upon the uppef. leather at that point.

. To. obviate the wear of the shoe at the toe, tips, made of metal and other materials, have been attached to the shoe or-boot at the toe. These tips are expensive and unsightly; and to rcinedy these defects is the object of my invention, which consists in constructing the last upon which the shoe is formed, in such a manner that the bottom, .or sole of the last shall be, made to curve upward at the toe, the upper end ofthe bot tmnof the last, at'that point, being made to project above the top part of the last. The top part of the last, at the too, may also be somewhat scooped out, in order that the sole of the boot or shoe formed upon the last,

may project above the upper leather, thereby protecting theupper leather at the toe, and counteracting the thrust'at the toe ofthe'shoe, arising from the einploy nent oiYheols, on they shoes, as above set forth.

In the accompanying drawing' a is the sole, or bottom of the last, which is curved at the toe, as seen in the drawing, so that the upper portion of the curve, at the toe, shall be above the upper part, .b, of the last, at itsjunction with the curved part c. 1

By this construction of last, the sole oi'a boot or shoe, made upon it, will project above the upper leather at its junction with the sole, thus protecting the upper leather at that point.

I ain aware that boots and shoes have been made with the toe turned up, but I am not aware that they have been made on a last of theshapc herein described, and for the purpose set forth.

\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As 'a new article of manuiacture,a last, having. its Sole, or bottom curved upwardly at the toe, so that the bottom, or sole of said last, at the too, shall project above the upper leather, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
