{ tion ol thc lid thc hingopiccc rotates, but it Jr.,.ot' (hit-ago, (ooh county, lllinois, have 1 cncy to wcar.
invented a new and useful Journal-Box. of which the following is a full, clear, and cxncl description, reference being had to thc accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichl igure l is a front elevation of a box showing the lid in a closed position. l ig. .2 is a similar view showing the lid opcncd. is a side elevation: Fig. '-t is a partial vcrtical section on the line [V lY ol Fig. l a horizontal section on the linc ol Fig. .l and Fig. 6 is a partial top plan \"iew.
The purpose of my invention is to pro idc a journal box i'or railway cars which will open edgewise, that is to say in the plane of thc lid, and shall be without any of the disad\ 'antages of instability and tendency to wcar which heretofore have characterized the lids oi such boxes.
in the drawings, 2 represents the journalbox and 3 is the lid. 'lhis lid has lugs .t which are pivotally connected by a bolt 5 to lugs t5, forming part of a rotary hinge-piece 7 connected by a pivot bolt 8 to a projection or lug 9 on the box. The spring it) bears l'rocly at one end upon the middle ol the lid and at its other end is clamped by the head ol the bolt 8 against the hinge-piece 7, the nut 11 by which the bolt is secured being on the inner side of the projccticm 9. 'lhc hinge-piece has a flat bearing upon the taco of this projection and is designed to turn thereon without tippingl The tension of the spring it) not only forces the lid against the seat on the box, but also presses the l'ii nge-piece 7 iirmly against its seat on the projection 9.
To open the lid the operator grasps the hand-piece 12 and pulls the lid outwardly, thus causing it to turn upon the axis of the bolt 5-, and to draw away from its seat on the box. This outward motion of the lid is proferably limited in its extent by stops 13 on the lugs t which are adapted to engage corresponding stops 14 on the lugs t3. .llaving thus drawn the lid outward from its seat on the box, the operator lifts it edgewisc on the axis of the bolt 8, thus moving it into the open position shown in Fig. 2, and this motion may, if desired, be limited by the stop 15 on the hinge piece which engages a stop 16 on the. projection 9. During this cdgewise m0- does not tip, lor it is hcld closcly to its seat by the spring ltl, and therefore has no tendln closing the lid thc operator moves it in thc rcvcrsc direction on the axis of bolt 8,
until it comes into closed position, at which timc stops 17 on the inncr sidc oi the lid cease Fig. 2; 1
to bcar on thc cdgc ol' the box and the lid is l'orccd inwardly against the box by the tension of thc spring.
'io prcvcnt a too l'ar downward motion of thc lid in closing, l prcl'cr to provide it with an cdgc llaugc l.\ which cngagcs the top of the box whcn the lid is closed. 'lhc stops l7 lit within thc box whcn the lid is in acloscd position and prcvcnt thc lid l'rom being jarrcd opcn, tor the lid must lirst be drawn outwardly on the axis ol tlnbolt 5, before it can bc. movcd into open position.
Within the scope of my invcntion the parts may bc modilicd in various ways, and the pivot bolt 8 may it dcsircd be applied to thc top or thc bottom ol' thc box opcning, instcad ol' locnt ing' it at the side as shown in the drawing. 'lhodctails ol' construction may also bc modilicd in many ways, since What l claim lSZ--- l. A journal-lm'x, a bingo piece, and an cdgcwisc mornblc lid pivotally connected to thc hingc-piccc, said hingc-picce being pivo't'cd to turn in the direction of cdgcwise motion ol the lid.
3. A journal-box, a hingc piccc. an edgewise movablc lid piyotally connected to the hingc-piccc, said hingc-piccc being pivoted to turn in thc dircction ol' cdgcwisc motion of the lid, and a s n'ing which bcars upon the lid.
3. A journaldmx, a hingc piccc, an edge- Wise movable lid pivotally connected to the hingc-piccc, said hinge-piccc being pivoted to turn in the direction ol' cdgcwisc motion ol' the lid, and a spring which bears upon the lid, said spring being attached to thc hinge-piece.
l. A journal-box, a hinge piccc, an cdgcwise movable lid pivotally connected to the hinge-piece, a pivot-bolt on which said hingc piece is pivoted to turn in the direction of edgewisc motion of the lid, and a. spring which bears upon thc lid, and is held by the pivot-bolt.
5. A journal-box, a hinge piece, an edgewise movable lid pivotally connected to the hinge-piece, said hinge-piece being pivoted to turn in the direction of edgewise motion of the lid, and a stop by which the pivotal motion of the lid on the hinge-piece is limited.
6. A journal box, an edgewise movable lid pivoted to the box at one side, said lid fitting fiat against the outer end of the box and having a flange at its up er edge to engage the top of the box when 0 osed and also havinga sto arranged to fit within the box; substantia ly as described.
7. A journal box, an elgewise movable lid having a fiat bearing on the outer face of the box and provided with a stop on the inner face of the lid extending within the box when the lid is closed to prevent edgewise movement of the lid, anda flat spring arranged to bear against the outer face of the lid.
A journal-box, an edgewise movable lid, and a rotary hinge-piece pivotally mounted on the box and having a close bearing against the same, said lid being hinged to the hingepiece and a spring for the lid.
. 9. A journal box, an edgewise movable lid, and a rotary hinge-piece journaled on the box, said box having a stop by which the motion of the hinge-piece on the box is limited.
10. An edgewise swinging journal box lid, and two hinges therefor, the axes of which are at right angles to one another, one of the hinges being a spring hinge.
11. The combination of a journal box, a main hinge on the box, a supplemental spring hinge upon the main hinge with its axis at substantially right angles to that of the main hinge, and a lid carried by the spring hinge.
12. The combination of a "ournal box, a main hinge on the box, a supplemental hinge upon the main hinge with its axis at substantially right angles to that of the main hinge, and a lid carried by the supplemental hinge,
, the main hinge being pivoted to turn in the direction of edgewise movement of the lid.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
