To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTHA ScHoTT- LANDER, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Corset, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention is directed to improvements in corsets, the purpose of which is to reduce and support the abdomen, giving a straight front to the body and graceful and symmetrical lines to the hips, thus providing a f oundation for a perfect fitting gown. This I pref erably attain by providing the corset near the bottom front thereof with an adjustable strap, the extreme ends of which are each at tached to diverging cords or lacings, having a slidable connection with the corset near the sides and thence extending in the opposite direction to the forward portion of the corset, where they are attached.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which is represented a corset having the preferred embodiment of my invention applied thereto.

The corset 1 to which my improvements are applied is stayed and gored in such manner as to in itself give a straight front and other such lines of grace and symmetry as is possible without my improvement. This comprises -flaps 2 which are sewed or otherwise attached to the front and near the bottom thereof at each side of the longitudinal center. The outer free edges of the flaps 2 are secured to lacings or cords 3 which pass through eyelets arranged in the free edges of flaps 4, these last-named flaps being sewed or otherwise attached to the corset near the opposite sides thereof. The cords or lacings 3, after passing through the eyelets in the flaps 4, are reversely turned. and are convergingly brought together and secured to the extreme ends of a strap 5, the lacings or cords being of such length as to all be substantially taut when the ends of the strap are pulled slightly below the center of the flaps and are disposed in the angular position shown. The center of the strap is retained in a depressed position after it has been properly adjusted across the front of the corset, by a depending hook 6 and operating to better straighen and depress the front of the body at this point. The lacings or cords 3 when the corset is being worn, automatically adjust themselves by the sliding connection with the corset through the flaps 4, and compensate for unequal strains brought to bear on this part of the corset when the body is in different positions. It is apparent that when the strap 5 is tightened, the pull on the lacings 3 not only tend to reduce and support the abdomen, giving a straight front to the body, but also operates to give graceful and symmetrical lines to the hips, thus providing a foundation for a perfect fitting gown.

Although I have described my invention in detail in order that my preferred form of construction and its operation might be fully understood, I, nevertheless, regard the precise embodiment as not material and consider that I am entitled to such changes as fall within the scope of the claims annexed.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In combination with a corset, laoings attached to the corset at each side of the longitudinal center of the front and near the bottom thereof, said lacings having a sliding connection with the corset further to the sides, a strap located at the front of the corset, the extreme ends of which are attached to said lacings, means for adjusting the strap, and a de ending hook for retaining the strap depressec at its center.

2. In combination with a corset, a flap attached thereto at each side of the longitudinal center of the front and near the bottom thereof, second flaps having eyelets and attached to the corset -further to the sides adjacent to the first-named flaps, a strap across the front of the corset, and lacings attached to the extreme ends of said strap slidable through said eyelets and attached to said first-named flaps.

3. In combination with a corset, a flap attached thereto at each side of the longitudinal center of the front and near the bottom thereof, second flaps having eyelets and attached to the corset further to the sides adjacent to the "first-named flaps, a strap across the front of the corset, lacings attached to the extreme ends of said straps slidable through said eyelets and attached to said first-named flaps, and a depending hook carried by the corset for retaining said strap depressed at its center.

4. In combination with a corset opening at the front and of the straight-front type, of flaps attached to the corset at each side of the longitudinal center, at the front and near the name to this specification in the presence of bottom thereof, of means fixed to the adjatwo subscribing Witnesses.
