`JOHN ROOT, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND MCLAGON AND STEVENS, OF SAME PLACE.
.Letters'Pateut No. 88,214., dated March 23, 1869.
IMPRovED BOLT-HEADING MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same- To all whom it 'ma/y concern Be it known that I, .JolisY ROOT, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Bolt-Machine; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to he a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, m
Figure 1, a side view;
Figure 2, an end view; and in Figure 3, a reverse side v iew.
lThis invention relates to an improvement in the machine for making holtsfor which Letters Patent were granted to me, bearing date October 29, 1867, and March 3, 1868, the object being to construct the machine so that a rod of indefinite length may be headed in the machine, as in my original machine only a short bolt could he headed; and
The invention consists in constructing the cams which operate the dies, upon a ring, which revolves upon bearings arranged around the holding-die, so that the rod may be entered through the saidring, for the operation ofthe dies.
To enable others to construct and use my invention, I will fully describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is a plate, set vertically upon legs B, and upon which are arranged the upsetting-die C and forming-A dies a., substantially in the same manner as in my machine before referred to.
The several diesa, which are fixed to their respective slides d, are operated by cams c, formed upon a ring, F,
through levers f. (See figs. 1 and 2.)
The said ring is supported upon rolls, or wheels h, arranged so as to support the ring F, and yet admit of its free revolution, by means of the pinion E, ou the driving-shaft H, working in the gear formed uponthe said ring, as seen in figs. l and 2. By lthis means, the
central portion ofthe ring is entirely open, and the turning of the shaft H causes the ring F to revolve, and'with it the cams c, which force the dies down upon the upset head of the bolt, and so as to form the head, and when released, the' dies fly backin like manner, as iu my machine before referred to.
The bolt to be headed is passed through the ring F,
and through the plate t, the proper distance, andis grasped by the holding-dies vI, arranged for the purpose. The die D is closed upon the bolt, which, with its corresponding die, forms a solid die, upon which to upset the rod.
Ihe` upsetting is performed by the'die C, which is operated by a cam, L, on the shaft H, substantially 'in the same manner as in my machine before described, the upsetting-die operating first, and then the squariugdies a, until the head is completely formed.
By this construction, a bolt of any length may be headed, and the only practical objection to or difficulty in my former machine is entirely overcolne.
I do not wish to be understood as claiming any of the parts separately, but only in combination, as hereafter described.
I do not broadly claim the arrangement of a camwheel, so as to Yoperate a number of swages at the same time, as such, I am aware, is not new. It will be observed that the cams' in my invention are arranged upon' a ring support-ed upon its exterior surface, so as to leave the centre entirely open.
Having fully described my invention,
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the holding-device, the open cam-wheel F, the upsetting-die C, and the formingdies a, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN ROOT.
