TOBACCO CUTTER.
' APPLICATION FILED MAR. 12, 190 7.
UNITED STATES PATENT onnron ARTHUR WESLEY TE'ASLEY AND MILLARD VAN, OF OZONE, TENNESSEE,
TOBACCO-CUTTER To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR WESLEY TEASLEY and MILLARD VAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Ozone, in the county of Cumberland and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a cutting device intended for use in cutting plug tobacco.
The invention has for one of its objects to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character so as to be comparatively inexpensive and easy to construct, composed of few parts, and efficient and reliable in use.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a tobacco cutting device which is equipped with a treadle-actuated means for operating the knife or cutter, said means.
including an adjusting device, whereby the apparatus can be adapted to counters of different heights.
With these objects in view and others as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims ap ended hereto.
n the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one of the embodiments of the invention, the figure is a perspective view of the rear of a counter with the cutting device applied thereto.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a store counter on which the apparatus is mounted. The apparatus comprises a baseplate 2 that is set into the counter top and secured thereto by screws 3, and rigidly secured to the plate is an inverted U-shaped frame 4 having longitudinal slots 5 in the vertical portions thereof for receiving the blade or cutter 6. This blade is adapted to have a combined vertical and horizontal movement so as to sever the plug of tobacco designated by 7 with a sliding out. One end of the blade is connected by the link 8 with an operating lever 9 fulcrumed at its front end on the rear corner of the frame 4, and
- the forward portion ofthe blade is suspended from the frame 4 by a link 10 that is inclined rearwardly of a plane passing through its top end so as to assist in imparting to the knife a Specification of Letters Patent.

sliding or drawing movement. The outer end of the lever 9 is connected by a pitman 1 1 with a foot lever or treadle 12 that is fulcrumed on a post 13 mounted on the floor. The pitman 10 includes a turnbuckle 14, whereby the distance between the foot lever and knife lever 9 can be varied to adapt the apparatus to counters of different heights. The front end of the treadle 12 projects beyond the floor post 13 and has an adjustable counterbalance Weight 15 that serves to restore the treadle and, through the intervening mechanism, the knife to their normal position. In other words, the weight serves to hold the knife or blade in raised position so that a plug of tobacco can be inserted thereunder and severed merely by depressing the foot lever 12.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent, and while we have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which we now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, we desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is 1. A tobacco cutter comprising a base plate, an inverted U-shaped frame thereon, a blade guided on the vertical portions of the frame, a link hingedly connected at one end to the blade at a point intermediate its ends and at the opposite end to the frame adjacent one corner thereof, a lever fulcrumed at one end on the frame at the other corner thereof and extending outwardly from the frame, and an inclined link connected at one end with the lever at a point intermediate the ends of the lever, and at the opposite end with the extremity of the blade and the lever acting directly through the second link for depressing and raising the blade and the first link serving to impart a drawing movement to the blade.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a plate, an inverted U-shaped frame rigid thereon, a blade guided on the frame, an inclined link pivoted on the frame and connected with the blade to suspend the latter, a lever fulcrumed at one end on the frame, a, link inclined toward the In testimony whereof, we affix our signaothler and conrllected at one end of the blade tures in presence of two Witnesses.
