BASE BALL GLOVE. uruounm FILED m. 22. 1907.
Uni-run s'nrrias PATENT OFFICE.
JOIIX GAMBLE. OF PHILADELPHIA. PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE A. REACH, OF
PHI LA DE LPHIA. PENNSYLVANIA.
BASE-BALL GLOVE.
Specification of Letters 'Patent.
Patented March 10, 1908.
Application flled November 22, 1907. Serial No. 403,253.
, and useful Improvement in Base-Ball Gloves,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improi'ementsin base ball gloves, and the object thereof is to produce an article of said class in which the tendency to rip or tear between the lingers at their juncture wit-h the body portion of the glove, when subjected to the strain of use, is obviated.
A further object of my invention is to produce a'glove of more simple construction in which the stitching in manufacture is more easily accomplished, and the damage verse seams' in the crotch between each of the fingers. Such construction produced the weakest portion of the-glove at the point where the greatest strain occurs in use, to wit: in the crotch between the fingers at the juncture of the two seams of stitching which united the front and back portions of the fingers and the back portions of the fingers with each other.
In my invention, the backs of the fingers of the gloves are cut in such shape that each.
alternate finger back extends beyond the crotch and forms a part of the side and back of the next adjacent finger, and is united therewith by a substantially longitudinal seam of stitching, thus obviating the transverse seam in the crotch between each finger,
and having the crotch formed of an integral portion of the finger backs.
To these ends the invention includes the combinations and arrangements of com ponent parts to he hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyingdrawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1' is a perspective view, Fig. 2 is a front viewithereof, Fig. 3 is a back view of the same, and Fig. tisanend' view.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 designates the front of a base ball glove, which as shown comprises the palnrportion 2 and finger portions 3, being made of a iece ofsuitable material such as flexible leat er, and having the thumb 4 stitched thereto.
indicates the back of the glove, which comprisesthe sectional finger portions 6, and the extensions thereof 7, which form the back of the hand portion 8, having the opening 9 and the fastening strap 10.
As shown-in the drawings, the finger portions 6 of the back'of-the glove are united to the front finger portions 3 by the longitudinal seams of stitching 11. thus forming the tin gers of the glove, For the purpose of avoiding'a transverse seam at the crotch between each finger, the back portion 6 of each finger is provided with an extension flap 12 at the base of the finger portion which spans the crotch between the adjacent lingers, and is united with the next adjacent finger by a substantially longitudinal seam of stitching 13, which forms a juncture with the longitu dinal seams 11 at (1, intermediate of the ends and the base of the fingers.
It will thus be apparent that the crotch between each finger is formed of an integral portlon' of the back of the glove, and the of the ball in use, and thumb 4 and the next.
adjacent finger may be connected by the web 14, as shown.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is In a base ball glove, the combination with a front piece comprising a palm portion and finger portions, of' a sectional back piece obviated, substantially as shown and dc- 10 forming the back and side portions of the body portion and fingers, said sectional back In testimony whereof, I have hereunto --p1ece eing provided with extension flaps on signed my name to these specifications in the 5 the adjacent sides of the fingers spanning the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
crotch between the fingers, and being united JOHN GAMBLE. to the next adjacent fingers by substantially Witnesses: longitudinal seams, whereby transverse HARRY M. DITTIE, seams of 'stitching'between the fingers are LINWOOD K. MOSES.
