provements in Vegetable-Cutters,of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates in general to improvements in vegetable cutters and more particularly to a novel device for slicing the cabbage used in making sauerkraut.
The object of the invention is to design a simple and inexpensive device of this character which can be readily mounted upon the barrel or other receptacle within which the sauerkraut is being made and which operates in an efficient manner to slice the cabbage as desired.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description. and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the vegetable cutter as applied to the upper edge of the barrel. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the upper portion of the device. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the upper bracket. Fig. 41 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of the knife carrying plate showing the method of mounting the knife thereon.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The device embodies essentially a supporting frame having a pair of brackets adjustably mounted thereon, one of said. brackets supporting a knife carrying plate while the opposite bracket has a shaft journaled therein in cooperative relation to the knife carry ing plate. Specifically describing the sup porting frame it will be observed. that the same comprises an upright standard 1. provided at its lower end with a cross head 2 which is designed to be applied to the upper edge of the barrel or other receptacle and carries the clamps 3 by means of which the device is held rigidly in position. The lower bracket 4 is provided with an opening loosely receiving the upright standard 1 and is de signed to be clamped in an adjusted position by means of a set screw 5 threaded in the bracket and engaging the standard.
H Supported by the lower bracket '1 is a knife carrying plate 6 which is preferably of a circular formation and is formed with a central opening 7. The said knife carrying plate 6 is also provided with a radial slot 8 extending from the central opening 7 to the periphery of the plate and having the knife blade 9 secured to one of the sides thereof, the cutting edge of the knife blade extending upwardly above the upper surface of the plate 6 and being inclined so as to slice a cabbage or similar member rotated. upon the knife carrying plate. In the present instance a ring or flange 1.0 surrounds the knife carrying plate 6 and serves to hold the cabbage or other member being operated upon in proper position upon the plate for being sliced by the knife 9. The upper bracket 11 is also formed with an opening loosely receiving the standard 1 and is designed to be clamped rigidly in an adjusted position by a set screw 12 engaging the standard. Journaled in the upper bracket 1.1 is a shaft 13 which is mounted in alinement with the central opening 7 in the knife carrying plate 6 and is provided at its lower end with suitable means. for engaging a head of cabbage, the said means being shown in the present instance as in the nature of the prongs or fork 14. A. crank 15 is fast upon the upper end. of the shaft 13 and serves as a means for rotating the same to turn the head of cabbage upon the plate 6 and the said sh aft is designed to move longitudinally within its bearings in order to properly feed the cabbage to the knife 9. For the purpose of holding the shaft 13 against moving too freely within. its bearings afriction shoe 1 6 is utilized whieh is pivotally mounted upon the upper bracket 11 and is held in a yielding engagement with the shaft by means of a spring 17. In the operation of the device the supporting frame is clamped in position upon a barrel or like receptacle and a head of cabbage placed upon the knife carrying plate 6 and thrown into engagement with the prongs 14. The shaft 13 is then revolved through the medium of the crank 15 and the cabbage thereby turned upon the plate in such a manner as to be sliced by the knife blade 9, the severed portions of the cabbage passing through-the radial slot 8 and falling within the barrel.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a standard, a knife carrying plate supported by the standard, a knife blade mounted upon the knife carrying plate,
a bracket supported by the standard, a shaft journaled upon the bracket in cooperative relation to the knife carrying plate, the said shaft being slidable longitudinally Within its bearings and being provided With means for engaging and rotating the material to be sliced upon the knife carrying plate, and a friction shoe mounted upon the bracket and engaging the shaft to hold the same against longitu dinal movement.
2. In. a device of the character described, the combination of a standard, a bracket supported by the standard, a shaft journaled upon the bracket and movable longitudinally Within its bearings, a friction shoe mounted upon the bracket and engaging the shaft to hold the same against longitudinal displacement, a knife carrying plate supported by the standard in cooperative relation to the shaft and provided With a central. opening to accommodate the said shaft, the plate being also formed with a radial slot, and a knife blade I mounted Within the radial slot, the before mentioned shaft being provided with means for engaging and rotating the material to be sliced upon the knife carrying plate.
In testimony whereof I al'fix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
