(Sintra DAVID WILCOX, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF, W. H. SLOCUM, AND W. A. BROWN, OF SAME PLACE.
Leners Patent No. 85,107, dazed March 23, 1869.
' IMPROVEMENT IN HATS.
m l The Schedule referred to`in these Letters Patent and making 'part of the name.
WP-h* To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID WILcoX, of Boston, in the county ofSuiollr, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inthe A Manufacture of Hats; and I.do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
To enablev others'skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and use. Y
The nature of my invention consists in making the brim of the hat of twice the required width, and in applying the sti'ening-preparation to one side of the same, after which the brim is doubled backupon itself, in such a manner that the stiiening-preparation shall be enclosed within the fold, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view ofthe hat.
Figure 2 represents, in section, the same, the dotted lines cc representing that part ofthe brim that is folded back or under the brim B B, when the hat is complete.
l construct my hat as follows:
The felt body is made in the usual manner, except that the brim is of twice the desired width, as indicated by the dotted lines in fig. 2. The under side of this brim is coated with the stiffeni11g-preparation, and
is then doubled back upon itself, as indicated in fig. 2,
By this operation, the stiiiening will be enclosed bea cement to unite the parts thereof, and to stilfen the same.
The ordinary method of stifening the brim, is to very objectionable, as the preparation soon shows through the felt, and gives the brim a greasy and dirty appearance.
By my method, the stifening is spread upon the surface of the felt, and then, the felt being folded, so as to bring the stiffening within the fold, there is no danger of the preparation working through and appearing on the exposed surface.
Having thus described my invention, I will proceed to set forth my claim. A v
What I claim as my invention, and desire lto secure by Letters Patent of the United States,.is-+{` A hat, whose brim is-formed of twice, the required size, and folded upon itself, the parts being united by the stiiening-material, or cement, applied to the inner surface ofthe folded parts, substantially as herein l described, and for the purpose specified.

tween the folds C and B ofthe brim, and will serve as' saturate it with the stiii'ening-preparation. This is
