Car Heater.
Patented March 2 3, 1869.
{tuitexl 5mm www F'. MoMA-NUS, 0F ELLE NBURG CENTRE, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 88,055, dated March 23, 1869.
RAILROAD-CAR HEATER.
Owe- The Schedule, referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To .all whom it may conce/m Be it known that I, F. MoMANUs, of Eilenburg Centre, in the county of Clinton, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Method of Heatingltailroad Passenger-Cars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, exact, and clear description of the same, which will enable others skilled in the art of making and using the same, reference being ha'd to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a side elevation ofthe interiorand bottom of a passenger-car;
Figure 2, a door view ofthe same, showing both sides of the seats, and the aisle in the middle;
Figure 3 represents the chamber for holding the heater; 'and Figure 4 represents the smoke-flue leadingfrom the pipe of the heater through each side `of the car.
The object of this invention is to provide a suitable and effective means for thoroughly disseminating heat in ca rs, and, in sov doing, preventing or obviating the incumbrances attendant thereupon in the construction of the ordinary car-heater; and
Vlhe'nature of my invention consists in the combination and general arrangement of such devices as will be hereinafter particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings is represented a passenger-ear.
In the space between the upper and lower part of its floor, are situated the chambers A A, directly beneath the seats in the car, and made of suitable d imen- Secured to the under side of the floor, at its'centre, is the box, or chamber, B, which is provided at one end with the trap-door F, as seen in fig. 3.
In this chamber is placed the heater H, which is securely fastened therein in any suitable way.
E represents/the. smoke-flue, or chamber, which is situated between the heating-chambers A A, directly over the pipe of the stove, or heater with which it is connected.
Thischamber E is provided with a partition, I, which extends from the point where it connects with the heater to the point where 4said flue is provided with branchpipes, for the purpose'of conducting the smoke in different-directions, as seen by the red arrows in iig. 4.
By the employment ofthe partition I in the smokeline E, the draught is caused to flow ineqnal proportions in the two directions, toward the front and rear of the car.
O represents grates, or registers, placed in front of the seats, or under the feet of their occupants, to admit the heat into the car, the grates being set in a portion, G, of the car-Hoor, which is hinged to the main portion of the iioor, so as to allow of its being taken or raised up, to remove any sediment or dirt that may have fallen through the grate.
D represents the main grate, or register, which is placed directly over the car-heater in box B.
I am aware that a chamber containing a heater, with side-chambers, registers, and smoke-nues connected therewith, have been before employed; but I am not aware that the said parts have been heretofore'combined and arranged, as in my invention; nor am I aware that'a partition has heretofore been used in the smokeue for the purposes set forth in my invention.
- What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy The chamber B, side-chambers A A, registers C C, and smoke-flue E, provided with partition I, all being constructed, combined, and arranged in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
