UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
LUOIUS GILL, OF WATERTOWN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN RADIATORS- 9 Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,80 1, dated March 14, 1876 application filed January 20, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUcI s GI L, of Water town, in the county of Jefferson and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Radiators; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to steam-heating apparatus and it consists in the construction. and general arrangement of a radiator, to be placed in the floor of the room to be heated, out of sight, and theheat to escape into the room through a register, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figurel is a plan view of my radiator with the top removed. Fig. .l is a vertical section of the same, through the line mm, Fig. 1, with the top in place.
My steam-radiator is made in the form of a pan, A, of cast-iron, square, or any other suitable shape to suit the room to be heated. It is formed with interior flanges a a, forming a scroll, and all cast in one piece. The bottom of the pan is made slightly concave, so as .to have a gentle inclination from the circumferr ence downward to the center, and'thc flanges a are made tapering, wider at the bottom and narrower at the top." The scroll-flanges com; 11161106 at one edge of the pan or bottom of radiator and run around a certain distance apart, from the edge of the pan and from each other, until they come to the center, where there is an aperture, b, communicating with a pipe, B, for the exit of the steam and water of condensation.
The top 0 is 'made of sheet-iron, of sufficient weight to be secure, and is well bolted to the outer flange, and to oneor more of the inner flanges, and is provided with packing d around the edges.
The steam enters through a pipe, D, at the outer end of the passage, and passes around the scroll-flange to the' center.
This radiator is intended to be placed in a suitable tight box in the floor, with a register on top, and in some cases I may admit hot air into said box, so that both the heat from the radiator and the hot air may escape through the register.
By this construction of radiator, I dispense with the radiators up in the room.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described horizontal steam-radiator, consisting of. the cast-iron pan A, with concave bottom, and interior tapering flanges a, arranged in scroll-form, the cover 0, inlet- I
