Description

N4 PETERS, PHOTO-L THOGRAPH LAMBERT'FREEM-AN,
OF NEW YORK, N.
Leners Parma' No. 88,028, dated March 23, 1869.
` IIVIPROVED EXTENSION-TABLE.
The' Schedule referred. to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concewt:
Be it known that I, kLAMaERm FREEMAN, of New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ExtensionTables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is' a top View of my improved table, part of the stationary part of the top being broken away.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line x, tig. 1.
Figure 3 is a side view of a pile of detached leaves.
' Similar letters vof reference indicate corresponding My invention has for its object to furnish a simple and convenient extension-table, which shall be so constructedthat it may be extended much or little, as may' be desired, and which will be firmly supported, however much it may beextended, and whether extended at one or both ends; and
It consists in the construction and combination of the parts by means of which it is extended, as hereinaftermore fully described.-
. A is the frame of the table, which is supported upon legs-B, of suitable height,'and to which the central, or stationary part C, of the top, is securely attached.
D are the end-leaves of the table-top, to each of which is securely attached a leg,1E, so that the said end-leaves will be securely supported, however much or little they may bev drawn out.
F arelong bars, the outer ends of which are securely attached to the end-leaves D, and which enter lon g grooves formed for them in the frame A.
, The bars-F are made long, so that when the leaves D are Apushed close to the top, C, the free ends of the said bars may project beneath the leaf of the other end of the table.
The movements ofthe bars Fare' limited by theistoppins j', attached to saidbars, and which strike against the end parts of the-frame A, between the said bars F, both when the end-leaves are pushed in, and when drawnout, said pins being made of such a length as to pass each other above the division-flange c, by which the two bars at each side of the table are ,kept in proper position while moving in and out.
Beneath the central, or stationarypart of the top of the table, are formed boxes, or receptacles Gr, for the reception ofthe detached leaves H, which are put into and taken out of the said receptacles G through an opening in the end-frame of the table, which opening is closed with a slide, a2, as shown in figs. 1 and 2.
To the under side of each of the detached leaves H, near their ends, are attached narrow cross-bars h,which, when the said leaves are packed intothe reeeptacIesG, keep them apart,- and, by permitting the free circulation of air between them, prevent them from warping. g
rlhe stationary top, or leaf C, end-leaves D, and detachable leaves H, are all provided with dowel-pins in the ordinary manner.
By this construction in extending the table, one or both the end-leaves are drawn out to the desired extent, and the detached leaves H are drawn out and arranged in their places, the table standing equally firm whether one or both leaves are drawn out, or whether the table be extended much or little.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The extension-table, having the two long sides of its body A provided with the double grooves, for the passage of the long bars F, which are att-ached to the leaves D, the space between said double-grooved sides being lled with the deep box Gaone ofwhose ends is closed by the vertically-sliding board a2, all arrangedaud operating as described, for the purpose specitied.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 20th day of J anual-y, 1869.
LAMBERT FREEMAN. vWitnesses:
FRANK BLOCKLEY, JAMES T. GRAHAM.
