STRIPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Logan, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stripers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to stripers and has for its object to provide a simple construction of striper which may-be used equally well against curved edges as against straight edges and which will at all times have a perfect freedom of movement and will produce an even stripe.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of means whereby one or more striping brushes may be connected with the stripers so that one or more stripes may be made.
In carrying out my invention I employ a block through which is adj ustably passed an arm which at one of its ends is bifurcated and is provided, in a line with the bifurcation, with a number of cylindrical sockets or bores for the reception of the shanks of the striping brushes. The block includes an extension which is grooved longitudinally for the reception therein of a roller which is designed to travel along the edge of the article being striped and thereby render the movement of the device even.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, Fig. 2 is a detail vertical longitudinal sectional view taken therethrough in a line with the bifurcation in the arm, Fig. 3 is a front elevation, Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal sectional view through the bifurcated end of the arm, and, Fig. 5 is a similar View through the lower end of the extension and taken above one of the bearing plates for the roller of the device.
As shown in the drawings the device comprises a block 6 provided with a longitudinally extending opening 7 through which is engaged an arm 8 provided with a scale upon its upper face. This arm is held at various adjustments with respect to the block by means of a set screw 10 which is engaged through the upper end of the block and bears at its lower end against the right angularly bent portion 11 of a bearing strip 12. This strip is secured preferably to the rear face of the block and extends downwardly and is bent at right angles to form the portion 11, the said portion being extended through the opening 7 in the block and slightly beyond the forward face thereof. When the set screw 10 is tightened, the striper is of course forced down against the upper face of the arm 8 and as a result, the arm is frictionally held in adjusted position.
The forward end portion of the arm 8 is bifurcated as at 13, the said bifurcation being formed vertically through the said arm. Formed in the opposing faces of the spaced members resulting from the bifurcation are pairs of opposing concavities 14 which in conjunction with each other form sockets for the reception of striping brushes 15 these brushes being held securely in their sockets by means of a set screw 16 which is engaged through the spaced portions formed by the bifurcation through a plate 17 provided with a threaded opening, the said plate being set into one side face of the arm. It will be understood that one or more brushes may be held upon the arm and that by reason of the fact that a plurality of such pairs of recesses are provided, a number of brushes may be held upon the arm and located at various distances with respect to each other thereby several stripes may be made at a time.
Set into the forward face of the block 6 is a plate 18 through which is engaged a set screw 19 provided in its lower end with a small socket 20 for the reception of a stud 21 formed axially of a cap 22. This cap is secured upon one end of a roller 23 and a similar cap 24 is secured upon the opposite end of the roller and is also provided with a stud which is indicated by the numeral 25, the stud being set in a socket 26 formed in the upper end of a set screw 27. The set screw 27 is engaged through a plate 28 which is set into the lower end of an extension 29 formed integral with the underside of the block 6. This extension is provided with a vertically extending concavity or groove 30 in its forward face in which the roller 23 is partially received. In order to prevent disengagement of the plate last mentioned from its seat in the lower end of the extension 29, the said lower end of the extension is slightly reduced as indicated at 31 and fitted upon the reduced portion is a ferrule 32 which at its ends, overlies the end portions of the forwardedge of the said plate.
From the above it will be observed that by loosening the set screws which constitute the bearings for the roller 23 the said roller may be removed and a new one substituted therefor. In using the striper it is placed with its roller resting against the edge of the article to be striped and then moved along the article, the brushes being drawn over the surface of the article to be striped.
That is claimed is 1. A striper comprising a block including an integral downwardly extended extension, the said extension being provided in its forward face with a groove, a plate set into the block at the upper end of the groove, a plate set into the extension at the lower end of the groove, said extension having its lower end reduced, a split fitted upon the said reduced lower portions of the front edge of the last mentioned plate, set screws adjustable through said plates and provided in their ends with sockets, a roller provided at its ends With studs which are seated in said sockets, and a brush carrying arm adjustably engaged through said block.
2. A striper comprising a block including an integral downwardly directed extension,
the said extension being provided in its for ward face with a groove, plates set one into the block and the other into the lower end of the extension, bearing screws adjustably engaged through the plates and provided each with a socket, a roller provided at its ends with studs which seat in the sockets in the ends of the screws, the said roller being in this manner journaled partially within the groove and projecting beyond the said forward face of the extension and the block, said block: being provided with a longitudinally extending opening, and a'brush carrying arm adj ustably engaged through the said opening.
