THE NORRIS Pzrzns cm, WASHINGTON, n. c.
SAMUEL E. GLADDING, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
FISHING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1908.
Application filed December 19. 1907- Serial No. 407.118-
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. GLADDING, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishing Apiparatus, of which the following is a specication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to meansfor catching fish; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device or apparatus of this class which is connected with, or operated in connection with, a small boat, such as a row boat or motor boat and which comprises drums or rollers mounted over, or at the opposite sides of the boat, an endless belt or similar device of any suitable kind mounted on said rollers and passing around the boat and provided with a plurality of hooks, and means for turning said rollers so as to carry the endless belt or similar device around the boat and through the water beneath the boat.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a boat provided with my improved fishing apparatus, and Fig. 2 a cross section on the line 2, 2 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in the drawing, I provide a boat a which may be of any preferred form and construction, and on or over the opposite sides thereof I mount drums or rollers I) over which is placed an endless belt, chain or similar device d which may be of any desired length, according to the depth of the water in which the boat-is placed, and being of such length as to extend a predetermined distance below the bottom of the boat. The endless belt, chain or similar device d is provided with a plurality of hooks c which may be connected therewith in any desired manner and on which, in practice, the fish-bait is placed.
One of the drums or rollers b, in the construction shown, is provided with a crank b and in the form of construction shown, the endless belt, chain or similar device d is made similar to an endless chain and composed of separate links, and the drums or rollers b are provided with sprockets b which pass through the links of the chain and when the drum or roller rovided with the crank b is turned, the endIess belt, chain or similar device d will be carried around the boat and through the water beneath the boat as will be readily understood, and fish will be caught on the hooks c My invention is not limited to any particular form of drums or rollers I), nor to any articular form or construction of an ent less belt or other device mounted thereon, all that is necessary in this connection being to provide a device of thisclass with which the hooks 0 can be connected, the drums or rollers b, and the said endless belt or other device being also constructed so that when said drums or rollers, or one of them is turned the endless belt or device will be carried around the boat and through the water as herein described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a fishing apparatus, a boat, an endless flexible device mounted transversely of and over the boat and extending around the same and through the water thereunder and provided with hooks and means for turning said flexible device around the boat and through the water.
2. In a fishing ap aratus, a boat provided with rollers mountec over the opposite sides thereof and an endless flexible device mounted on said rollers and passing around the boat and provided with hooks.
3. In a fishing apparatus, a boat provided with rollers mounted over the opposite sides thereof and an endless flexible device mounted on said rollers and passing around the boat and provided with hooks, one of said rollers being also provided with a crank.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 16th day of December 1907.
SAMUEL E. GLADDING.
