WIFFIESEEyE:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JosEPH E. LEMYRE, or MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.

To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. Lemma, a citizen of the United States, residing in Man- Chester, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bobbins for Cotton- 'this general character being illustrated in Letters Patent of -the United States o.
788,806, granted May 2, 1905.
In the Letters Patent referred to, the
sleeve or tube (termed'a cone in said Let-,
ters Patent) is connected with the s )indle by means of cars or projections which extend from the inner end of the sleeve into longitudinal slots in the spindle, said ears bending substantially from their extreme rear endsthe ends which join the tube-diagonally or at obtuse angles into the slots. It has been found in practice that 'in tubes or sleeves, whether conical or with parallel sides, provided with ears of this shape, the thread is frequently pinched against or under the inner end or edgeof the tube and is thus broken. M invention has for its principal object to o viate this difficulty by preventing the thread at or about the time when the sleeveis being released by the unwinding of the thread from coming in contact with the said end or edge of the sleeve, the thread being prevented or guarded from or against such contact by the shape of the ears or projections themselves. As the improved ears send oil the thread from the adjacent end or edge of the tube, pinching and consequent breaking of the thread is prevented.
' The nature of the invention isyfully doscribed below, and illustrated in the accoinf panying drawings, in. which- Figure 1 is a view of as indle with my im proved sleeve in'position t iereon, the thread eing nearly unwound'from the bobbin, and that which is left on the spindle bein guarded or fended oil fromcontact witht 0 tube by the ears or projections which extend into the slots in the spindle. Fig. 2 is a longitu- Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 9.1907. Serial-No. 361.4%.
its powhich fem loye Patented Feb. 18, 1908.
I dinal section of a portion of the spindle with the ears in the same position as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in pcrspectiveof the sleeve removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
a re resents the spindle, and b the head thereo said spindle being provided with the opposite longitudinal slots 0. On the portion 6! of the spindle between the slots and the head is a loose tube or sleeve e, referably of substantially even diameter throughout its len th, the rear outer end oi-the sleeve bein orrned up into an annularfiange f, may be engaged by any, suitable mechanism which is exposed to the direct blows of the feeler. The inner end of the tube e is provided with two cars or projections, which are opposite each other and extend into the slots 0. Each of these ears is integral with thesleeve, and consists of the broad portion 9, which is in a, strai ht line with the portion of the side of the tube from whioh'it extends and the portion h which bends inward at substantially right angles with the portion 9 into the slot 0. The ortion h is comparatively narrow and the e ges of the portion 9 broaden regularly, as shown from the portion 71. to the body of the tube.
- In practicalo oration, when the thread is nearly unwoun and the sleeve is loosened in its position, said sleeve is checked in its a proach toward the thread by the ears, and tl ie thread comes in contact onl with the portions h of said ears, being he (1 oil from the adjacent edge or end of the sleeve by the ong enoughto prevent any possibility'of the thread bein reached and inched by thesleeve and t us broken, T e width of the portion 9 is' suflicient 'to insure stren th to prevent saidportion from bending, an as the portion 9 is bent inward at right angles there is no danger of the thread riding up onto said portion.
