To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERVIN E. LARRABEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Williamston, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Boiler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved boiler or heater of the water-tube type, and arranged for generating steam or for use in hot water heating systems for heating the water, the boiler being arranged to utilize the heat units of the burning fuel to the fullest advantage, to provide a large heating surface in a comparatively small space, to insure rapid circulation of the water and quick heating thereof for steam generating purposes or for heating purposes, as the case may be.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed outin the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in all the views.

top with a smoke stack A2. In the casing or shell A are mounted longitudinally extending lower or mud drums B, B located near the sides of the casing A, and in the top middle portion of the casing is arranged a longitudinally extending upper drum C. The rear ends of the lower drums B, B are connected with each other by a transverse tube D connected by a feed water pipe E with a feed water pump or the like forsupplying the boiler with water. From the middle of the transverse tube D extends a branch pipe D connected with the upper drum C. The front ends of the lower drums B, B extend beyond the front of the casing or shell A, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, and the said front ends of the lower drums B and B are connected by vertically disposed tubes F and F with a transversely extending steam drum G arranged outside of the casing A and provided onvtop with a steam dome H from which leads a steam pipe I for conducting the generated steam to an engine or other device in which the steam is to be used. The forward end ofthe upper drum C is connected by a pipe C with the steam dome II, to conduct the steam from the upper drum C into the steam dome H. As indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the drum G is arranged a distance below the upper drum C.
The grate J of the boiler is arranged between the lower or mud drums B, B and their rear tube connection D. Each of the lower or mud drums B, B is connected by sets of water tubes K, K with the upper drum C, the said sets of water tubes K and K extending along the sides and top of the fire box, so that the burning fuel on the grate J heats the said sets of pipes and the water contained therein, to insure a proper circulation of the water and quick generation of the steam.
Each of the sets of water tubes K and K is arranged as follows: Tubes K2 and K3 are connected with the drums B (B) and C, respectively, and the said tubes K2, K3 lead to unions or heads K4, K5, connected with each other by a plurality of water tubes K6, staggered relative one to the other, as plainly indicated in Fig. 5, so as to form rows of inner and outer water tubes. The Water tubes K6 rise from the unions K4 straight up at the sidesgof pthegrenbox, lthen Abendginward t0- scribed each set of tubes K or K has but a single connection with the corresponding drum B, B or C, and still the plurality of tubes are in each set and form the sides and top of the fire box, the tubesbeing staggered so that the heat developed by the burning fuel in the fire box thoroughly heats the water in the said tubes, to insure quick heating of the water and quick generation of steam.
By arranging the drum G in the manner described the water level can be readily maintained in the boiler a distance below the drum C, so that the steam in the upper ends of the sets of tubes K, K can readily pass into the drum C, and from the latter by way of the branch pipe C into the steam dome I-I.
The sets of tubes K and K may be provided with additional pipes, as indicated in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, 9, that is, in addition to the pipes KG each set has an additional shorter pipe K7 connecting the unions K4 and K5 with each other, the said tube K7 being inside the other tubes and extending vertically from the union K4, then inward, then upward, to connect with the other union K3, as plainly indicated in Fig. 6. By this arrangement a quicker circulation of water is had by way of the tube K7 than in the tubes K3.
As illustrated in Fig. 8, each set of tubes K or K is provided, besides the tubes K, with a tube K3 rising from the union K4 to terminate in a union K3, from which leads a plurality of tubes K10 to the union K3. From the foregoing it will be seen that any number of tubes may be connected in various ways with the unions K4 and K5, and hence I do not limit myself to the particular arrangement of tubes shown and described, as the same may be varied without deviating from the spirit of my invention. i
In the water heater illustrated in F igs. 10 and 11, the casing A3 is in the form of brickwork and the lower and upper drums B2 and C2 are located outside of the casing A3, and are connected with each other at the ends by tubes L and sets of tubes N, similar to the sets of tubes K and K connecting the drums B2 and C2 with each other between the end tubes L. Each of the sets of tubes N is connected by the pipes N, N2 with the drums B2 and C2, and the said tubes l N2 are provided with unions or heads N 3, N4 connected with each other by a plurality of tubes N5 arranged similar to the tubes K6 previously mentioned. The casing A3 is provided with the usual front doors A4, smoke stack A5 and a grate vJ, and the drum B2 preferably extends transversely at the rear of the casing A3, and into it lead the return pipes B3 of the water heating system, while the drum C2 extends transversely at the top front portion of the casing A3, and from it lead the outlet pipes C3 for conducting the hot water to the radiators of the hot water heating system.
The connecting tubes N5 extend from their unions N3, in the rear of the casing A3, upward, then forward, then rearward and then forward, to finally connect with the unions N4 arranged in the front upper portion of the casing A3, as indicated in Fig. 11. By the arrangement described the burning fuel on the grate J is untilized to the fullest advantage as the heat reaches every one of the pipes N3, to insure quick heating ofthe water circulating therein.
Although I have shown a heater arranged for hot water heating system in Figs. lO and l1, it is evident that I do not limit myself to this particular use of the heater.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A boiler comprising a pair of lower longitudinal drums, an upper longitudinal drum, sets of water tubes connecting the upper drum with the lower drums, the said sets of water tubes extending along the sides and top of the fire box of the boiler, and each set of water tubes having single connections with the said drums, a plurality of tubes between the connections, a transversely extending steam drum arranged somewhat below the said upper drum and connected with one end thereof, a steam dome on the top of the said steam drum, pipes connecting the said steam drum with the said lower drums, a feed water pipe connecting the said lower drums with each other, and a branch pipe leading from the said feed water pipe to the said upper drum.
2. A steam boiler comprising spaced parallel mud drums, a feed water tube connecting the drums, an upper drum arranged between and above the mud drums and substantially parallel therewith, a branch pipe connecting the feed water tube with the upper drum, sets of water tubes connecting the upper drum with the mud drums, the said sets of water tubes being arranged along the sides and top of the fire box of the boiler, a transverse steam drum in front of and at a lower level than the upper drum, pipes connecting the steam drum with the mud drums, a steam dome on the steam drum, and a connection between the steam' dome and the upper drum.
3. A steam boiler comprising spaced parallel mud drums, a feed water tube connecting the drums, an upper drum arranged between and above the mud drums and substantially parallel therewith, a branch pipe connecting the feed water tube with the upper drum, a plurality of water tubes connecting the upper drum with the mud drums, a name to this speeicaton in the presence of ltranlsvr steam rum above and below te two subscribing Witnesses.
