To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Some THURSTENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefi'erson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a boiler of the water tube type.
The objects of the invention are to arrange certain baflies in certain relation to the fiues of the boiler whereby the heated air from the fire box is directed in a path of travel which causes it to circulate efficiently about all the flues of the boiler.
A further object of the invention lies in arranging the flues in offset or staggered relation, as respects one another, whereby the heat is deflected in its travelfrom a straight course with the result that it circulates about all of the tubes.
The invention further consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure'l is a view partly in section of the boiler of the present invention showing the relative arrangement of the various drums and flues, together with the relative arrangement of the cross walls and fioorings; Fig. 2 a longitudinal section through one of the drums; and Fig. '3 a diagramatical view showing the staggered arrangement of the tubes.
Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Fig. 1, the boiler is shown in connection with a furnace structure A of any suitable and well known style, and this structure embodies the usual grate 5. The boiler itself consists of a water drum 6, a mud drum 7, a lower steam or hot water drum 8, and an upper steam or super-heating drum 9. Each of the drums is supported in position by any suitable supporting means.
Entered into the water drum is a water feed pipe 11 which extends through one head of the drum, and passes lengthwise. of the drum to within a short distance of the other head, it then connects with a cross pipe 12 which in turn connects with a pipe 12 extending lengthwise of the drum and opposite the pipe 11, this pipe 12 lies within a feed water heater drum 12 which extends lengthwise of the drum and in an inclined plane, this drumis open at its highestend and the feed water empties thereinto, a pipe Specification of Letters Patent.

10 is provided which enters the lowest end of the drum 12", and acts as a blow off pipe to remove any dirt or sediment which may have, collected therein. A baffie plate 13 extends longitudinally of the drum 6.
Extending from the water drum 6 to the mud drum 7 is a series of tubes 14. Arranged within the mud drum are baflie plates 15 and 15 placed as shown in angular relation to one another, the function of these baffle plates will more clearly hereinafter appear. Extending between the mud drum 7 and the lower steam or hot water drum 8 is a series of tubes 16. Some of these latter tubes, namely those designated by the nu meral 17, run out of parallelism with the remainder of the tubes, so that they are spaced away from the inaj or portion of the tubes, and might be described as a set of tubes above the tubes 16, although they are a portion of the tubes which establish communication between the mud drum 7 and the steam drum 8. A series of tubes 18 establishes communication between the steam drum 8 and the water drum 6, and a series of tubes 19. establishes communication between the steam drum 8 and the upper steam or super-heating drum 9, and a series of tubes 20 establish communication between the water drum 6 and the steam drum 9.
' Along the lower of the tubes 16 is placed a battle of suitable material 21, which bafiie extends from the forward end of these tubes, to a point adjacent the rear end of the tubes leaving an opening 22 between the rear terminus of thebaflle and the mud drum 7 A baffle 23 is placed along the upper of the tubes 16 and extends from the rear end of these tubes to a point adjacent the front end, leaving a space 2 1 between the front end of this battle and the drum 8. A cross wall 25 extends from the front end of the baflie 23 to the lower of the tubes 18. A baflle 26 extends along the top of the tubes 17 and terminates intermediate the ends of these tubes and at points intermediate the ends of the baflie 23. A space 27 is left between the front end of this bafiie 26 and the cross wall 25, and a space 28 is left between the rear of this bafile and the tubes 14:. A cross wall 29 rises from the forward end of the baffle 26 and extends to the lower side of the tubes 20. A baffle 30 is positioned above the tubes 19 and-20, and a stack 31 communicates with the interior of the structure in p which the boileris positioned, and lies to the rear of the cross wall 29 and adjacent to thev water drum 6. By this arrangement of baflles and cross walls an efiicient circulation of the hot air is effected, so that it will circulate in a manner to act upon all of the tubes of the series of tubes of the boiler. The course of the hot air is described by arrows in Fig. 1.
By referring to Figs. 2 and 3, (especially Fig. 3) it will be seen that tubes of the various sets of tubes are arranged in'a staggeredrelation with respect to one another,
' and the tubes in each set are arranged in rows inclined at an angle from vertical position. The object of which is to bring each tube in each set into a staggered relation to the remainder. Each alternate space 16 between the rows of tubes is made sufiiciently large in order that any tube in the set may be removed Without disturbing the re -mainder. By staggering the rows of tubes bination of a water drum, a mud drum, a lower steam drum and an upper steam drum, a series of vertical tubes connecting the water and mud drums, a first set of tubes connecting the mud and lower steam drums,
a second set of tubes connecting the water and lower steam drums, a third set of tubes connecting the lower and upper steam drums, afourth set of tubes connecting the upper steam and water drums, a first bafiie below the first set of tubes, said baflie extending from the front of the boiler to adjacent the mud drum, a second bafile extending from the mud drum to adjacent the front of the boiler and above the first set of tubes, a first vertical bafiie extending from the second bafile to the second set of tubes, a second vertical bafile to the rear of the first vertical bafile and extending from the second to the fourth set of tubes, a third bafile extending rearwardly from the rear vertical baflle along the top and in contact with the uppermost of the second set of tubes to a point adjacent the vertical tubes, and a smoke stack at the top of the boiler above the third bafile, substantially as described.
