GUN-REST.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
. Application filed October 18, 1907. Serial 115. 397.978.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH JERANEK, a subject of the Em eror of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of t .e city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Imroved Gun-Rest, of which the following is a ll, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to gun rests, and is especially ada' ted for use by sharp shooters,-
- marksmen an infantry, where very accurate .vide a device of the class described adapted shooting is essential.
An object of my invention is to provide an adjustable gun rest which can be firmly mounted u on the ground, and which presents a rigid support for the free end of a rifle or other weapon.
A further object of the invention is to proto be removably carried on the person 0 the operator and easily available for use.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more particularly described hereinafter set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specificaand I part1cularly tion, in wh1ch similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, 1n which Figure 1 is a pers ective view of my device;
Fig. 2 is a longitu' inal section showing the means for adjusting the height of the device; Flg. 3 1s a side elevation showing my device attached to a belt; Fig. 4 is a cross section showin the method 0 ttaching my device to abe t; and Fig. 5 is a plan v1ew showing the un securing means and further showing in otted outline certain parts in another position. g Referring more particularly to the drawlngs, 1 re resents a standard fashioned from any suitable metal, such as steel, aluminium, or the like, and sharpened at its lower end to permit of its being inserted into the ground. The upper end of the standard bears a button or enlargement 2, integral therewith, and
for a purpose to be hereinafter described. A
disk 3, 1s mounted upon the standard and serves to hold the latter in position, limitin the enetration of the standard into the earth. llihvably arranged upon the standard is a hollow or tubular support 4, which has its lower edge 5, bent inwardly to serve as a stop to the button 2 of the standard, thereby pre-' venting the withdrawal of the standard from t .ing t e free end of a the support. The lower portion of the su port has a threaded opening 6,'in which is .mounted a set-screw .7, by means of which the support may be secured in a plurality of positions. The u per portion of the support 4 may, if desired, be provided with a detachable head 8, having a'threaded or other suitable connection wlth. the support. Rotatably mounted upon this head and pivotally connected thereto by means of a rivet or bolt 10, is a bracket 9. A stirrup 11 has resilient arms 12 suitably spaced for securing the free end of a gun 1n position, and is pivotally mounted between the sides of the bracket 9 by means of screws or bolts 13. The stirrup 1 1. maybe fashioned from any suitable spring matenal, such as steel, brass orthe like.
I provide a carrier 14 including a spring cli the arms 16 of which serve movably to hold the device. The carrier 14 has lateral flanges 15 which can be secured to a belt or other portion of the apparel of the operator by means of rivets 17.
invention is not only useful for securgun in position to permit of very accurate shooting, .but also on rifle ranges and the like, for mounting a gun,
especially after it has been used, and allowing it to cool ofl" evenly on all sides. When used as a sup ort in firing, the pivotal action of the brac et and the further pivotal action of the stirru permit of the gun being securely su orted in a plurality of positions.
' aving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: y
1. A device of the character described, comprising a standard,a sup ort having a telescopic engagement with sald standard, a
' bracket rotatably mounted on the upper end of said standard, and a stirrup pivotally secured to the ends of said bracket and rovided' with inverted free ends of resilient material.
2. A device of the class described, comprisin a standard provided on one end With a hea a tubular sup ort having a telescopic engagement with sald standard and provi ed with a contracted lower end to engage the head of said standard, and serve as a stop, a bracket rotatable horizontally on said support, and a stirru pivotally attached at its sides to the ends 0 said bracket and provided with inverted free ends of resilient material. 3. A device of the class described, com- Batented Feb. 11., 1908.;
prising a standard, provided on one end with a head, a bearing late attached to said standard, a support aving a telescopic engagement with said standard and provided with means for holding said support and standard inengagement, means attached to said support for locking the support and standard fixedly in position, a bracket ro-' fatable horizontally on the upper end of said support, and a stirrup having 1ts central portion shaped to conform to said bracket, its
sides pivotally connected with the ends ofsaid bracket, and inverted free ends of resilient material extending inwardly of the sides of said stirrup.
4. A device of the character described, comprising a standard,'a support having a telescopic engagement with said standard, a bracket rotatable horizontall on the upper es end of said support, a stirru aving its $1 pivotedto the ends of said bracket and provided with inverted free ends of resilient material extending inwardly of the sides of said stirrup, and a spring clip adapted to be de I tachably secure to said support.
In testimony whereof I ave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. 7
JOSEPH JERANEK.
