Description

Patented Aug. 24, 1926.
THOMAS E. FSSELL, OF NAVY Y ARD, SOUTH CARLINA.
cHArn TTACHMENT.
Appiicafion med May 18, 1925. seriai m. 80,088.
This invention relates' to chair attachments, and more particularly to a head rest adapted to be supported on the back of an ordinary chair or a rocker.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character that is adjustable to the height of the person using it,
and is also adjustable to permit its use on different types of chairs and chairs of dif-` ferent sizes.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for supporting the lower end of the head rest to permit its use on chairs having upholstered seats, and other constructions of chairs wherein the device cannot be clamped on the seat of the chair. p
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair showing the invention applied,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the clamping element of the head rest, the upper part being shown in side elevation,
Figure 3 is a detail Vertical sectional view 011 line 3 3 of F igure 2,
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view on line 45-4; of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a cover for the pillow or rest, and,
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the upper end of the vertical supporting member and the pillon1 or rest showing the manner in which it is adjusted horizontally.
Referring to the drawings, the reference nuineral 1 designates a base member or support which may be formed of any suitable material, such as Wood, and which is mounted in a suitable casing or cover 2, formed of cloth of any desired pattern or design. Within the casing, I provide a plate 3, preferably formed of metal and having a hook 4 on its upper end, adapted to engage the upperedge 5 of a chair back, as shown in F igure 1 of the drawings. At the bottom of the casing, 'I provide a plate 6 secured to the base member and projecting from the casing. The projecting portion is provided with a hook 7. The device is clamped to a chair by-means of a plate 8 having an opening 9 therein for the reception of the hook 7 and having a finger grip 10 formed on its upper end. A coil spring 11 is secured to the lower end of this plate and a fiexible chain 12 is secured to the coil spring.
The` chain may be adjusted in length by placing anyone of the links in the lower coil 13 of the spring. Asshown, a hook 14 is carried on the lower end of the chain and is adapted tov receive a rung 15 of the chair (see Figure 1).
The base member is provided with a longitudinally extending groove 16 in its face (see Figures 1 and 4) adapted to receive a vertcally adjustable arm 17. The ad- ]ustment of this arm is Controlled by means of a bolt 18, extending from the casing 2, and received in a plate 19, anchored in the base member. As shown, the bolt is rovided with a suitable Operating handle 20.
The upper end of the member 17 is extended at right angles, as indicated at 21, and is provided with side flanges 22. An upstanding bolt 23 is arranged in the extended `portion 21 and is adapted to be received 1n an elongated slot 24:, formed in a plate 25. A nut 26 is adapted to be arranged over the bolt to retain the plate in adjusted position. This plate carries a pillow or rest 27 which is preferably formed by providing a rigid hacking plate 28 to which the horizontal plate 25 is secured and mounting suitable springs (n-ot shown) thereon, the springs being covered by fabric in the usual manner.
A cover 30 adapted to fit over the head rest, may be provided, and this cover is open at the rear. The rear edge is provided with tie stings 31, adapted to be fastened when the cover is placed in position, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description. The base plate 1 and its associated parts is first placed in position by fastening the hook 4 over the back of the chair and the hook 14 is then placed on the rung 15 or other suitable support. The chain 12 is adjusted and the upper end 10 of the plate 8 gripped by the fi'nger and snapped over the hook 7. The device is then clamped on the chair and held in position by the tension of the spring 11. The Vertical arm 17 may be adjusted to any desired height by loosening the bolt 18 and then tightening it in adjusted position, and the rest may be adjusted forwardly or rearwardly by means of the adjusting nut 26. a
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size, Iand Karrzangernent of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the nventon orthe scope of the snbjoined clam.
I clam: i i
In a device of the Character 'deser-"Wed, a supportng member, ;sad' member being provided with a groove, a plate secured to sad :member and adapted to coact with said groove form Ya s'llot, .said plate 'being Vprovided at its upper end 'With atrfansversely dfispn'sed Curved *.porton adapted to eng-age the back of a cha-ir, a ver'tfioa'lly fdsposed 15 arm adjustably mountefd 'said `s'o't and provided at its upper :end with ;a horzontally fdsposed extension, 'said extension being provided With side fianges, a bar slidably mounted on said extension between said flanges, a bolt adapted'to secure said bar against anovement, a head rest mounted on the endeor'f said bar, said supportng member being provided at its lower endrvvth an upturned book, da fiexble member adapted :to :be 'connected to. the round 'o a. :rihar, and nes'lc'uent means for 'connectng said fi'exf fble member to `said hook.
In testimonjy` whereof, I 'affix sgna-V i ture.
