is usual, the end of the axle upon which the bearing rests is somewhat reduced in diameter, thereby providing the inner and outer shoulders 41 and 42 which may engage the ends of the bearing as the axle tends to shift lengthwise in one direction or the other. forming the rojections or lugs 16 and 17 integral with t e side frame and making them and the strains are transmitted directly tov of cast steel as are the side frames they Withstand the shocks much more vsatisfactorily the side frame rather than indirectly through the journal box, as has heretofore been customary. Another advantage of this forni of side frame and journal 'box casing is that the latter ma be readily andV ickly separated ame Without diiliculty by merelIv removing the nuts 34 from the U-sha ed bo t 33. In order to exclude dirt and ot ier foreign substances from the interior of the box, the joints between the same and the side franiemay be acked with any suitable material, asis wel understood. It should be noted furthermore that the enlargements 19 and 20 not onl aord means for the accommodation of t e U bolt but also materially aid in bracing the projections 16 and 17 and holdingthem in lace.
To those. skil ed lin the art it will be -apparent that many minor mechanical changes may be made in the structures shown and described without departure from my invention.
I claim: I'
1. The combination of a car truck side frame having one or more lugs or rojections integral therewith, a journal box liaving'one or more apertures through which said lugs or projections are adapted to extend int the interior of said box, a U-bolt passin around said box to'fasten the same. to said si e frame, and nuts for the ends of said bolt, substantially as described. Y
2. The combination of a car truck side frame having lugs or projections integraltherewith, a `ournal box having apertures through which said lugs or projections are. adapted to extend into the interior. of said box, said box also having a groove on its external surface, a U-bolt adapted to lie in said groove and secure said box to said side frame, and nuts for the ends of said bolt, substantially as described.
3. Thel combination of a car truck' side frame having apcrturcd bosses, a journal box.
or casing adapted to be fastened to said side frame and having recesses or pockets to house the said bosses, and' a bolt and nuts to secure said journal box to said side frame, said bolt passing through theapertures of said bosses, substantially as described f 4. The combination of a car truck side frame having apcrturod bosses and integral lugs, ajournal box or casing having holes through which said lugs are adapted to ex- .tend into the interior of the box, said box being ada ted to be fastened to said side frame and iaving recesses or pockets to house said bosses, and a bolt and nuts to secure said journal box' to said side frame, said bolt passing through the a ertures of said bosses, substantially as descri ed.
5. Thecombination of a car truck side 'frame having 'a crtured bosses and integral lugs, a ournal box or casing adapted to be fastened to said side frame and having holes through which said lugs are adapted to extend into the interior of said box, saidbox also havingl recesses or pockets to house said bosses, a journal, a journal bearinghaving shoulders co-acting with said lugs, and a bolt and nuts to secure said journal box to said side frame, said bolt passing through the apertures of said bosses, substantially as d o- JAS.
