Be it known that we, EDWARD TlisK, ot' Fitchburg, and CHARLES T. FORD,

chusetts, have invented an do hereby declare the same to he fully described in the following specification, and represented ,in the accompanying drawings, of which* Figure 1 denotes a longitudinal section of `the gun, and its projectile, or torpedo-carrier.

The barrel ofthe piece, we form in two sections, A B, the latter of which, B, is inserted within and projects from the front part ofthe bore, orchamber, a, of the other, A, the same being as represented in fig; 1. Within the bore of the part B there is arranged and xed a cylinder, C, -on which to hitch springs, shown at b, the said spring or springs being also hitched upon a stud, c, projecting upward from the heel-piece d of the hammer, or plunger D.

The shank, or stem, d', of the said hammer, slides By introducing a rammer, or rod, into the muzzle of the gun, and pressing .the hammer back, the spring or springs will be distended until the stud passes by, and rises and catches against the rear end of thel part B, in which case the heel-block d of the hammer will come directly underneath a trigger, or vertical slide, E, arranged in the gun in manner as represented.

By pressing down the trigger, so as to depress the heel-piece, suilcient to force its stud away from the breech of thepart B, the spring or spliugs will be set 4free, and, by their contractile power, will smartly advance `the hammer.Y

There is connected chain,

or cord, or a. ilexile wire, f, a ball, or projecztile, F, Within vwhich is a chamber, g, which opens through the rear of the ball, and is for the purpose o f receiving a. common torpedo, or detonating cracker, which is vusually composed of a small amount of fuland some sand or gravel,'and anenvelope rof thin paper.

Just in advance of the cylinder O there is a hole, i, leading downward from the bore'of the piece, such hole being for the purpose of' discharging the 'sand or which may be blown rearward on of the explosion of the fulmnate'; rubber spring or springs may not the wire by the force In'order that the be injured by the sand o r'the flame during an explosion, there is arranged against the front end of the cylinde1 ',a metallic plate, or guard, k,which covers the spring or springs in such from the flame and sand.

The advance of -the plunger will be limited byits heel-piece being brought into contact with the rear end of the spring-cylinder.

We claim the combination, as wellas the arrangement of the bitching-cylinder, orv block, O, the spring or .springs b', the heel-piece d, its studs c, with the parts A and B of Vthe gun-barrel, and a trigger applied there` to, so as to operate the he iece as specified.l

Wealso claim the ball, or projectile, as made with a chamber to receive and hold the torpedo; also, as combined with-the gun by means of a iexile wire, or its equivalent.

We also-claim the ball, or projectile, as constructed with a torpedo-receiving chamber, and the wire for holding the ball to the gun, as made with a loop, -or` its equivalent, for the purpose into the chamber, as set forth.

We also claim the arrangementand combination of the ball i with the gun and the plunger, arranged and provided with mechanism for' operating such plunger,

substantially as specified.
