To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that FELIX LYDE AMES, a ,Great Britain, residing at Fairburn, Willingdon Road, Eastbourne, in the county of Sussex, England, gentleman, has'invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Berths for Ships, of which the following is a specification.v

This invention relates to berths for ships, and'has for its-object to render berths or bunks more comfortable and toafiord increased convenience to passengers while enabling the berths or bunks-to occupy the minimum amount of space. i

According to my invention the berth or tray suitably supported by props'or legs and adapted to carry a mattress which may be of the usual spring or other character; the frame being provided with side and end flaps or trays adapted ,for ;employment as hereinafter described.

' In order that the said invention may be and readily carried into effect I will proceed to describe the same the accompanying drawing? in which v igure 1 represents a side view of a berth or bunk constructed accordin to my invening plan and along the line a;x in Fig. 1.

The berth or bunk comprises a frame a having a mattress?) attached to or supported thereon. The frame is formed or provided with an upwardly extending side a and a head piece (1; pillars or uprights being arranged as at e c for supporting a side fl'ap f. This side flap may be formed in sections hinged or otherwise suitably connected and 'when-in the position shown in full line inthe drawings, the said flap may be secured in such position by bolts indicated at f f. to protect the the occupant from falling out. Or the said flap may be arranged so as to serve as a seat at the side of the bunk or berthas indicated inbrokecv lines in Fig. 3, the portion f X which 'is the oufer portion of the said flap, or its upper portion when in its vertical position serving as the seat. When not required for protection or for a seat as hereinbefore described the whole of the aforesaid flap portion f may be concealed by bringing the same from its vertical to a horizontal position and then p'ushing the same into-the frame or tray a. When used as a seat the outermost section of the flap near to the point where it is hin ed to the inner section takes a bearing on t 'e 'adjacent part ofthe frame or tray. The said outwardly extending portion of .the flap f may however be supported upon a trestle-or trestles or other suitable structure or struc tures. The head piece d' may if desired be arranged similarly to the side flap The Ly end 9 of the berth is arranged in such a man ner that it may eitherform-a folding; end piece to afford protection in cold weather or .it may form a seat or a table for toilet or other uses. This end 9 may be composed of a flap, hinged at g and provided with-hinged le s 9 connected with the said flap by a folding strut g 'so that, when the flap is turned into a vertical position to protect the occupant of the berth; the legs may lie snugly against the outer surface of the flap. and so occupy very little space. -If desired the space between the legs g may be filled in withpaneling and when assuming the 85. position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 it may serve for toilet or any other desired use. The table may be formed by securing in a horizontal position across the legs a tray or flat surface preferably of wood, additional trestles or other convenient devices bein employed as desired for supportin the sai tray or surface. The bunk or bert may be suitably upholstered or portions may be padded and cushions or other articles may be provided as may be necessary or desirableand according to the'requirements or the taste or fancy of the occupant. At the head portion of the bunk orberth there may be provided'a drawer or tray h adapted to receive articles of food, drink, medicine. To render the articles on the said tray readily accessible to the occupant of the bunk or berth the side piece of the bunk is suitably shaped at the upper edge to permit the occupant to readily reach" any articles a de osited on the said tray h.

t er i i'ey combined in one bunk, or berth, trays for food or other articles, protection against the effects of rough weather, seats and tables, all of which are readily accessible to and capable of easy manipulation by the occupant.

Where the cabin wall forms one side of the bunk or berth, it is obvious that the side devices will be applied to the side remote from such wall. The bunk or berth may if desired, be constructed in sections for convenience in packing for transport or other purposes.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United- States is 1. In a bunk or berth, a mattress-supporting frame having an upwardly extended side and head piece, a sectional side flap foldable beneath the mattress frame and uprights for supporting said flap and between which it is retained in vertical position.

2. In a bunk or berth, a mattress-supporting frame having an upwardly extended side and head piece, a sectional side flap foldable beneath e mattress frame, uprights for supporting said flap and between which it is retained 1n vertical position and locking means for said flap when in'its vertical position.

3. A bunk or berth having a hinged side slidably foldable beneath the berth and a hinged end, said side being in movably united sections.

4. In a bunk or berth, a frame having guides beneath the same, a movable flap in hinged sections adapted to slide within said guides and to be concealed beneath said ame and uprights between which said flap is held when in distended vertical position.

5. In a bunk or berth, a mattress-supporting frame having guides beneath thesame, a movable flap in hinged sections adapted to slide within said guides and to be concealed beneath said frame, and a sto to prevent complete withdrawal of said ap from the guides. I

6. In a bunk or berth, the combination of a mattress-supporting frame, uprights on said frame, a side flap of hinged sections 00-- operating with said uprights, a guide for said flap beneath said frame, a stop to prevent the complete withdrawal of said flap, and means for securing said flap, when in its ver tical position, to said uprights.
